I've done it a couple of times, using foamcore board, black foam & foil, even a sewn fabric one. Foamcore is the easiest to work with, some hot glue holds it all together easily.
The problem I've found with DIY softboxes is twofold; first, they tend to be heavier than "real" ones, and finding a way to mount them to the strobe/lightstand can be tricky. Second, they usually look somewhat DIY, which may not be something you're always comfortable with.
For reference, the ones I made were for Speedlights.

Prices are so low on ebay now that I would have a problem justifying the time needed to build one. My 4ftx6ft one used to go for 500 dollars but now I see them at under 150, just to give you an idea.

I built one from a cardboard box and some parchment paper and tin foil.
Draw an outline of your flash head on the back or top of the box, cut it out so your flash can pop through. Glue tin foil all over the inside and make sure it's flat, then measure some parchment paper out for the box, cut it, pull it tightly across and tape it into place making sure there are no gaps.
Put your flash in and voila, a softbox. |
