How about trying a couple of challenges with the titles suppressed until after the voting. I think there would be less stretching of the imagination required in voting.

I like titles.. they either add to the photo or they take away from it... it's sorta like a creative extension of the photo :)

I was told years ago that a good picture shouldn't need to have a title, and that it should be self explanitory. I don't especially agree with this theory but I do look my pictures over very carefully in hopes that a title will jump out for me. Usually this works and if I have difficulty in settling on one the picture usually doesn't tell a story. The story is one of the major elements that a picture should have, and it is equally as important as composition and technical quality. Remember this is just a novice talking.

I like um too. I just want to see the results without them for a few challenges. You know, kinda like judging the photo on it's own merit and how well it captured the challenge without all this "ARTISTIC" bs.

There was another thread somewhere in the forums with a suggestion to put the titles under the photo, so the photo is seen first. I like this idea. Comments?

I may have suggested that. Also, suppress the titles on the voting thumbnails page, either until the person's finished voting (then they can decide for themselves if the title affects their score) or until the challenge is over. That way, people who don't want to see the titles can avoid them fairly easily, those who do want them can just scroll down.

And it doesn't help that you are in the middle of Hickville either. ;)

Hey!! I resemble that remark. Hickville is just a hoot and a holler from where I live. Or, for those who aren't southern....about 10-15 minutes.

Yeah, it's about the same distance as "down the road apiece".

I think photos without titles is like a newspaper without headlines ... or even better a photo without a caption. I agree with jmsetzler ... they either take away or add.Art museums have used them for ages, with great sucess. I, for one, am very thankful for them.

True, but Art museums generally have them beneath the photo/painting etc., and small so that your initial impact is the work.
