Saw this cute little thing in a store yesterday - they have it for abot $15 less than retail at B&H and am trying to decide if I should pull the trigger (despite my constant admonitions to self that unemployed people shouldn't buy toys!) Does anyone have this beastie and how has it worked for you?

works just as advertised, but takes some getting used to and feels awefully small. If it were me again, I would probably save the money for something at least a little larger, but it is great to get started if you want to just try the system out.

I don't have the bamboo puppy, but I have a wacom 4x6.

I agree it takes getting used to, but it is useful. Coupla things to know: it is basically pixel mapped, so it is not at all like using a mouse. If you want the cursor to be on a specific place on your monitor, you have to put the pen on equivalent location on the tablet. Sooooo.... smaller tablet than larger may be better if you don't want to be moving your hand/arm around a lot. Also, there is quite a bit of additional tablet housing around the actual sensitive pad, so you need a goodly amount of space on your table/desk. And if your monitor is more widescreen than not, a 4x6 might work out better than a 4x5, for more intuitive stylus placement. I have two friends who bought the 8x10 and wish they had gone smaller.

What I would really like is the primo version which is a touch tablet with a monitor behind it, so you are working right "on" the image. Pricey buggers, though.

You can set pressure sensitivity (or none, I think), so that retouching can be delicate or strong or anywhere in between depending on how hard you press the stylus, so less setting of strengths via menus, etc.

I push my keyboard closer to the monitor, and place the tablet right in front of me (offset slightly to the right as I am right-handed). It didn't work well when I tried to place it next to the keyboard, where my mouse usually was.

I must say that I still tend to use the mouse quite a bit. It is not a problem with the tablet, but with my retouching style and lack of patience for big moves across the tablet. While the pen has "mouse buttons" I found it was taking some time to get used to. I had some quick edits to do, on a deadline, so I kinda pushed the thing to the side and went with what I know. It is still there, handy, and I plan to dedicate some time to learning the ins and outs of it, because I know it will let me do more precise and finer retouches, etc. It is, for me, a big change from finger clicks on a mouse, and very small wrist movements with a mouse, to the larger motions and different way of getting to on-screen menus.

I think you will like it, but at first you might find it awkward.

I use BamBoo and it works very nice. I am using it for over two years now without a problem.

i just got a bamboo pen and touch this year and i LOVE it. im sure the intuos are nicer but i wasnt ready to pay 200 bucks for one. for the price you just described, its a steal. its simple yet functional and makes selecting, painting, dodging and burning in photoshop 100 times easier. it has certainly sped up my workflow significantly when it comes to spot/selective adjustments.

sooo i get to pen in the left, mouse in the right!

Go for it, would have got one years ago if i knew then what i know now.
