Jeremy, when I ordered my Rebel, I got a warranty package with it that allows for annual cleanings at approved camera stores. Not sure if you got something like that set up. Otherwise, I'm not sure if Canon covers cleaning under the warranty or not.

If you're willing to take on a certain level of risk and test of your steady hands, this site:

//www.pbase.com/copperhill/ccd_cleaning

has some pretty detailed instructions and testimonials on cleaning SLR CCDs and CMOSs. I'm kind of nervous about it, but I think I'll eventually be doing that myself because I'm starting to see some persistant spots at f/22, and I don't know if I'd be able to put up with waiting 1 year between cleanings.

I just had mine cleaned, I had to pay to have it shipped to canon and they pay to have it shipped home. It was free and altogether it took 2 weeks for shipping and cleaning.
I am not sure what happens when gaurentee runs out.

I've cleaned my 10D sensor with the copperhill method a couple of times. It works like a charm, takes 10 minutes, and costs less than $1.00 per clean.

I will echo Lenkphotos opinion. I have cleaned mine twice, will do so a third time this weekend. 10 minutes, < a buck in materials, and it's clean as a whistle. You'll sonder why you ever worried about doing it yourself.
I made my own tool (used the Walmart spatula), but you could just as well buy the one from copperhill, since it's pretty inexpensive.

There are a lot of spots though. I dunno.

I took my camera to my local camera store, fully assuming I'd have to pay something to have the sensor cleaned, but no -- they did it for free and I didn't even buy the camera there (although they've sold me THOUSANDS of dollars worth of other stuff).
