i cant believe that 90% of the photos disregard the fact that it suppose to be a PORTRAIT of a bird not a WHOLE bird. this is ridiculous!!!
i guess the majority is going to make its own rules and go by them...

As usual, there seem to be two camps of challenge interpretation. Some zeroed in on the word "portrait", others zeroed in on the description "Photograph a wild bird in a natural environment". It will probably means the winner will be a low score.

I guess I'm confused because to me, a portrait could be a full-body shot or just the head, either one. Just the head, from what I understand, is a portrait called a head shot. . . .

Maybe I should have sprung for a 800mm lens, that's about the only way I could get a head shot of the WILD birds around here. Oh well.

a portrait in art & photography is a portrait by its good old definition - head & shoulders.... not really open to anyone's personal interpretation, sorry.

So this isn't a portrait?
12/28/2009 12:35:29 AM · #21
in a challenge like this head shots make me suspicious that it was actually shot in zoo, and cropped. Also as Karmat says portraits can be of the whole body as well as the more commonly portrayed head shots1 Look at the Old Masters.

Sorry this isn't open to anyone's personal interpretation, or didn't you listen to the gentleman(and I use that word loosely) who posted the definition? ROFL I love the holier then though people of this site. It's good entertainment.

regarding a "portrait" - vast majority of people in the field will agree its "head & shoulders".
taking a portrait shot of a bird in the wild will make it that much harder.... isnt this what challenges are all about?!

It's climbing, so I'm off to bed. Just can't stand to watch the fall that I'm sure is coming.
