Hi. Am I the only one wondering how cliched the winning entries of the beer/soft drink challenges are? Admittedly, I probably wouldn't be able to submit anything as polished as the winners had. But the question remains: having an audience with much more imagination than your average bud/fosters/coke/carling consumer, why did results in the top20 come down to the same old cliches in splash/cold/ice theme? After 20th position new themes and approaches start showing, but apparently voting power bent to the same simplistic logic. I am really depressed by the way beer industry is peddling inferior drinks propped up by tonnes of glitz and it's sad to see photographers playing up to the same rules.

Because the challenge called for an advertisement, and the ribbon winners were all great examples of stock photography? Not to take anything away from "artsy" images...I love them, too...but that's not what the challenge called for. JMHO.

Shiny objects and pretty colours is whats going to sell. Thus why they say you have 3 seconds to get your initial point across.

If you haven't figured out yet that very few people on this website actually have any kind of imagination, then there may not be much hope :D

True, my image isn't 'original' but it was a good shot. I made the top 20 for the first time ever and I am very proud of mine. Only took 430 shots to get it!

I think there were a lot of great shots in this challenge and when creating an 'ad' there are certain things people look for...an ad targets certain people and I guess the winners of this challenge did just that...their target audience was DPC and they know what the viewers like.

I was more surprised that there was only two entries with a woman in it. And one of those didn't even have a beverage in it. I suppose women don't drink beer or soft drinks and aren't a good way to get a man's attention. :P

i was disappointed by the types of beverages in the top.. c'mon, Stella??? miller chill???? bleeehhhhhhh!!! awesome photos, but poor choice in what you guys put in your body. 21.gif franktheyank's was my favorite by far because Stone Ruination is so tasty.. mmmmmm

I like Stella. As long as it is served ice cold it is a good beer.

ETA: couldn't agree with you more on the Miller Products though. That pisswater goes straight from the Milwaukee River right into the bottle.

i'll give you stella, it's really not bad, just not my cup of tea... but when i get a pint of stone ipa, i spend at least 30 seconds holding the glass up to the light and enjoying it's perfect color and aroma and then i drink half of it in 2 gulps.. mmmmmm i'm so happy i'm off tomorrow, i'm going to enjoy a few tonight =)

A great OP - and a good point. The Acid challenge will be pretty trippy I'm sure but beer ads mean conformity I suppose Your buddies do it, so should you! put on a jersey, throw some brats on the grill and tail-gate it's Miller time =)

Seriously though I think sometimes people practice photography using the cliche subjects trying to emulate the people in the field which - in commercial advertising, doesn't always get overly creative.

Perhaps an interesting challenge could have been "Beer and Softdrink non-ad". Photograph beer or a soft drink in a creative way that doesnt not come across as an advertisement.

An idea for next time. Could be a Where did I set my drink? challenge.

While we're on the subject I was wondering why this didn't do better? I really thought it would. Too dark?

It's a good shot, but I'd have to agree with the few people who mentioned it being a little dark. I think to make this really pop the can should have more lighting to separate it more from the background.

Couldn't agree more...even Foster's is pisswater and in my time in Australia it seldom featured on the shelves of the local or bottle store. Maybe that's why they export it like mad 'cos the locals won't touch it. Tooheys or XXXX are way better.
This ad was tops though despite the brand:

Our local here (Castle Lager) gives me a chemical hangover the next morning, after a 6 pack. They "brew" one every 6 seconds...or so I'm told...One ingredient > maize! (corn)

I drink Windhoek Lager, Windhoek Draught or Tafel instead from Namibia, a land with more desert than land (or water) :P The Light is good too. No chemicals and under the German Reinheitsgebot, i.e. no chemicals!

You might enjoy the adverts too...check them all out at youtube.
