they are $250 cdn at Henry's in Canada... i want to use it for macro of bugs...

i'll be using it with a SB-900 and a Nikon 105mm VR (and possibly a Tamron 180mm macro in the near future)

anybody know anything about them? the people at Henry's were raving it and it looks pretty good for the price (probably like $200 US)

any help would be great, thanks

It's really honking big for macro, and will be *very* inefficient for that purpose. The reason is that they are intended for portrait work, and so nearly all of the light is directed straight forward. thye are so big that they will interfere with you getting up close, and when you do, you'll find that the majority of the light misses the subject.
You'd be much better off for macro by getting a bracket and diffuser for your standard speedlight.

good point... true true...

ok... back to my original idea... what about the Nikon R1C1 (i think) kit that comes with the commander and the two little flashes that mount on the front filter thread? any ideas on that? anyone have it?... (can I control the little flashes with my SB-900?)

thanks =)

On her profile 21_F.gif roz states that she uses the following for her awesome insect macros:

"helpful to have your own light source .. i use a Canon Speedlight 580EXII external flash with a Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce plastic diffuser"

My SB-800 came with a nice diffuser which apparently is similar to the Sto-Fen ones -- does the SB-900 have one as well?

yup, it does... I have done that before with a SB-600 on a SC-28 cord with a sto-fen diffuser, but then you have to hold it in your hand... i'm looking for something more simple, like the ones mounted to the lens filter thread...

Macro, just using a sb-900, mounting on the hot shoe. I used the stock diffuser.

I had a Sigma flash like this one for my macro lens for quite a while and loved it. Might consider it if that is what you are looking for.

I use lens reversal, only a $8 to make my 50mm and 35mm into macro work horses.
