(I'm procrastinating hardcore right now so this seemed like a good time to share.) A funny thing happened when I quit SC and moved away from DPC - I started taking pictures. Who knew? I needed something to fill the time I'd been spending haggling over rules and violations so I started meeting up pretty frequently with my local Flickr and Strobist groups. Sometime in the beginning of 08, I started shooting professionally for children/family shoots and started doing more weddings than I had in the past. A year ago yesterday, I quit my desk monkey job to do photography full time. I'm pretty happy to have made it a year and not be working at McDonalds. :) I shoot children and families almost exclusively, with special-exceptions weddings (good friends, my sister, roller derby wedding!) and some random commercial work and other opportunities.
I thought I'd share some of my more recent work. These few are from a preschool shoot I'm still working through (school photos that aren't so boring, woohoo!). I photographed 200 kids in three days...it was like spinning around on my head. I need to finish editing them but that's what I'm procrastinating.

Gratinations on saying no to The Man and then not letting him drag you down the road to the McDonalds!! You started hanging out with intertubes frootloops? I should try that - it might make me and my cameratato one again. Except the only intertubite within 150 miles moved to Alaska ... anyway....

I gotta say that I am still stunned. Not with these most awesomest amazing photos you're taking but that you go on Flickr walks, do Strobist groups and take pictures of kids. The end of time is most definitely near.

Hey mk, huge congrats on having the intestinal fortitude to step off that cliff, quit the grind and do photography full time!
My own one-year quitaversary (from SC, not the *other* job) is coming up in a couple months, but I can't say I've really done a whole lot more photography as a result :-P |

Great, great work. Who did your blog? By that I mean is it wordpress? Did you have it custom designed? Did it come with your website (I think I saw you use bludomain)?
I have a crappy blog right now and want to get a better one so I can show bigger photos (like yours has). |

| Yup, the blog is run on Wordpress. The template is a modified version of the Tofurious template which is pretty much the same as the ProPhoto template that every photographer on the planet is using except that it's a lot cheaper. :) |

Kirbic, That is because you spend most of your free time on a constant quest for a better breakfast..
The OP by mk has me thinking. DPC is a great tool for learning about photography but in the long run it can limit you if you spend all your time taking pictures that fit a certain criteria. Rule Sets, Voters Choice etc.. It is hard to break away from it for alot of us, Like myself. I am still on that never ending quest for a ribbon. I think that I have learned alot here, But I also might be limiting myself at the same time because I am shooting in the DPC box. Limitations on what you can do with your photos and trying to avoid the DNMC, file size restrictions etc. Makes me think some time away from DPC might be more helpful then the time I am spending here right now. It seems to have worked for mk because the photos shown here are very nice work. I am going to hang around a bit longer to see if I can get at least one ribbon before I go, But I am 100% sure that next year my membership renewal money will be put towards buying new gear instead and my time will be spent shooting pictures without challenges in mind when I am taking and processing them.

Beautiful photos, I'd go so far as to call the kid shots exceptional. Funny story about quitting, too -- so there can be life after DPC!
