I know a lot of people here are concerned with their images being stolen. This won't stop images from being stolen, but it will help us know which ones have been.

This feature also doesn't need to tell us every single image view we get; I'm sure the last hundred or so will be fine.

Of course, if all of your last 100 image views are of your recent ribbon winner, there is nothing fishy about that, but if all 100 views are of the flower picture you uploaded last week, you'll know to use tineye or something to find the thief.

an image only needs to be viewed once to be stolen and for that matter, probably isnt viewed at all when it is stolen. i don't see the benefits in this

I have a couple of flower pictures that have had hugely disproportionate views. Quite obviously they have been 'stolen'. Not quite sure by who tho' or why.

If they have lots of views, then probably someone who liked it posted it with a link to your image -- that's more like free advertising. It would only be a copyright infringement (not "theft") of they claimed the image as their own, or were selling it or objects on which it's printed.

If your only "evidence" is an inordinate number of image views, it's quite possible they never "stole" your photo at all, but could have just posted a text link, like this: Check out this gorgeous red rose!

It is a gorgeous red rose, it's mine!! Where did you find this link?

Sorry, what an idiot, you made the link, however some of the pics are not as gorgeous as my red rose!!

Yes, that's my point. I know one of my images has been linked/"borrowed"/whatever because it has about 150 more views than the rest in the same bunch, and all of those views happened in less than 48 hours. If I hadn't been monitoring how many views that particular group had received, I wouldn't have noticed.

There has been a few times when my number of image views has jumped a few hundred over the course of a few hours. I'm not a well-known user and I don't score very high in the challenges, so I know that when that happens it's probably not due to my popularity, and I wish I could tell which image(s) got all those views in such a short period of time. I don't memorize how many views each image gets, so I can't say, "Hmm, this image just got 32 view in the last half hour! Must be stolen!"

I just think it would be another way to help those of us who care if our stuff is link to be able to know about it.

All of these pictures have ridiculously high views. Something very fishy going on. I actually asked the site council about it the first time it happened (no response tho).

What happens is someone sees and likes your picture, and then posts it and/or a link to it on their blog, Facebook site, uses a service like stumbleupon or diggit, emails it to their friends, etc. As long as you are getting views on your image page here, you really should consider it free advertising -- they are referring people to you and giving you full credit for your work.

You should only worry when you find your image on someone else's site without attribution or a link-back to here, especially if they are selling it, claiming it as their own, or have modified it. If you are worried about that, then use Tin-Eye as you mentioned earlier.

Remember that copyright law permits some "fair use" of your photos. For example, if I was writing an article comparing flower pictures taken with dSLRs to stock images shot on medium format film, or those taken by amateur and professional photographers, I could probably use one of your images (with attribution) under the "critical or educational use" section of the copyright law.

This viewed look always surprises me 8504, but I can not find it anywhere else on the web, just here!

Twice in this thread you have said the words Free Advertising. It is free advertising for DPC more so then the person who's photo got linked.

It would be nice to have some way of knowing where the hits are coming from. That way if the photographer/owner of the photo does not wish to have their photo showing up on a blog they do not want to be associated with they can at least have a way to find that blog and posibly contact someone to have it removed. For example would you want a photo of your kids or a friend that you posted here on DPC showing up in a blog that you may for one reason or another find offensive?

That would be cool if it can be done. However, there is really no way to prevent someone from posting a hyperlink to your photo's page -- the internet/web is set up specifically to enable such linking. How is linking to a specific photo not "advertising" the photographer? I bet very few of the links would read "hey -- check out the way the portfolios look at this great hosting site -- and they even run weekly contests!"

That said, I try to be careful about what photos I post here with any identifiable person(s) in it ... someone would have to really "shoehorn" most of them to make them relevant to an "offensive" blog/site ... :-)

I know there is no way to prevent linking, But that is not what i was getting at. I am talking about having the link removed if need be. As for advertising. The photographer does not have a banner add with their name at the top of the page. And I really doubt that most people look at the photoghrapers user name much less click on through and view their profile page. Also the person could link to the full sized view which has neither DPC or the Photographers info anywhere on the page it is photo only. Cool Photo
