So, I have about $1800 budgeted for a lens or a couple lenses. Here are the two options I'm looking at:
1) Buy the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-EDand maybe have enough to get a UV filter....MAYBE! ;)
2) Buy the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED and the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED
These would primarly be used to shoot weddings.
What would you do???? |

| Dude, honestly I'd go for option 2. My thinking is if you are shooting weddings, those two will give you more versatility in the long run. |

I second the motion for option #2, Both are awesome lenses. The only problem is you will have a hard time deciding which one is more fun to use.

Looking solely at the focal lengths and nothing else....Option 2. Figure 50 mm is normal to what we see. If you are taking close shots in rooms, etc, you'll need something wider.
Do you have 2 bodies? It would be best if you had an extra one so you wouldn't have to switch lenses.

The first lens is MAGIC. It's the only lens I own where a 100% crop still looks very good, so it radically expands the effective focal length.
However, if you're shooting weddings, go for option 2. It's unlikely the wedding party will want closeups of their nose hair from 20 feet away. |

Why? Unless you are clumsy and drop your lenses all the time, use a hood on all your lenses to protect the front glass. Why introduce another layer of glass to (more-than-likely) degrade your image quality?
p.s. I know this is a controversial topic (using filters for protection). The above is simply my personal experience and my opinion. In the 15 years that I have been using SLRs, a hood was enough to protect the front elements.

Stuff happens, however. I had my 70-200 mm lens (Nikon) for about 2 weeks, was taking photos of this guy who was standing on top of his cage.
While I was in the middle of taking photos, he zoomed over real quick before I had a chance to move and pecked the lens real hard -- fortunately I had a UV filter so now I have a scratched up UV filter instead of a scratched up lens. |
