i love it when hurricanes don't make landfall, not only because it's terrible when people are in danger but also because after a summer of flat conditions, it's nice to get some waves. i really hope this one follows the projected path, and i'm really stoked that my new 400mm f/5.6 L will be here tomorrow :D

if i'm not surfing, i'll be taking a ton of pictures.

| ok ok. so how about it sorta hits your work, just enough to close it and not cause any damage or anything, and then gets back into the ocean so it pumps some serious swell my way? |

It seemed to be a little choppy in S Florida this past weekend. Saturday afternoon it was a bit wavy:
But then it calmed down the next morning:
I'm sure they will be thrilled with more wave activity.

Steef,
Although not the east coast, I thought you may enjoy some of the pics I shot a couple of weeks ago of Kelly Slater with my 70-200 f/2.8 L . . .

We got hit by 2 back in 2004 within 3 weeks of each other. These are pictures of my old house right after the first one. We lost electricity for 2 weeks (sadly, my office did NOT lose power at all so I still had to work) and had $25k of damage on our house.
Here is a link to some pictures. Mostly you can just get a feel for the flooding; the lake that can be seen in the pictures is my back yard, where a lake or pond does not exist.
But the worse part was no a/c in South Florida during September for 2 weeks.

I remember Donna as being the worst hurricane in my memory. In 1960, no one came to help out except the Red Cross people, and they didn't get there for a long time. We were pretty much on our own after a hurricane in those days. Power was out for about a month then. Since then, Andrew, and Charlie have been the worst in this area, with Wilma a close second to them. We were out of power for about a week here with Wilma. I have an old diesel generator, so we furnished power for ourselves and a couple of neighbors.
Here is a useful link if you are watching a 'cane.
