Hadn't seen this posted already so apologies if it is a duplicate - new stuff from Nikon announced today.

D300s and others

New bodies and new versions of my 2 favourite lenses.

The D300s is just what I've been hoping for!!! A D300 with HD movie capture!!! LOVE!

Been quite a few rumours about this. I'm looking forward to the 70-200mm. I wonder if it will be much more expensive than the current model.

I hope the D300s has better noise performances in low light situations. Not complaining about the D300, though.

" The D300S brings HD movie capability, a faster frame advance rate of 7fps and dual CF and SD memory card slots "

These don't seem like pertinent selling points for this D300 user. The new lenses look interesting, however.

Cool!

That means D300 prices will be coming down.

I want a D300 *SOOOOOOOOO* bad! LOL!!

They should have upp'ed the Megapixels to 15 to compete more with the 50D. Not worth the upgrade for me. I want to see the D700 with a bit more megapixels.

yeah it has HD but what made me raise a eye-brow is..

External stereo sound input and autofocus during video.

And a quiet mode?

I've been in the position to upgrade for awhile now, but was waiting to see what would be officially released. Now that it's officially out I don't know if I want it.

Even though the D300s is basically the D300 with video, I somehow feel dirty considering a camera with video. I feel like one of those film purists that feel digital isn't the real thing. Like somehow just having the video option on my camera would make me a bad person and a sellout to consumer marketing. At the same time if I get the regular D300 I know I'll get into a situation where I wish I had the D300s.

Why couldn't they just have given then D300s a fancy new sensor and more pixels, anything to make the still camera better and not just some gimmicky bullshit? Why do they have to be stuck on this video crap all of a sudden? Now I'm going to upgrade and next year they'll release something that I really would have wanted, but then can't justify affording again. I could go the used D300 route this year and upgrade again next year, but I don't wanna! Dammit, I says, dammit!

I'm waiting for the D400 so's I can get a deal on the D300.......8>)

I also wish they'd quit spending upgrade money on friggin' video.

I will *NEVER* buy a still camera that has that feature.

If I want a video camera, I will buy one.

Yeah, I'm not all that impressed with the 300s myself. I certainly don't plan to upgrade ostensibly only for video. The quiet mode was the most interesting part, I thought, but it apparently just allows you to return the mirrow manually, which might just make it super annoying.
Wider angle flash is sorta nice... but it's only 2mm wider so... woop de doo.
The increased drive speed is paltry too... considering you could get that with the grip anyway. Meh, I guess the kneejerk urge to add video to everything is really going to take hold. ::sigh::

Jeb, I hate break it to but I don't think there will ever be a DSLR released without video capabilities - that cat is out of the bag. Your wallet thanks you. :)

eta: I don't italicize well.

That's what I'm hoping......that there will always be one up-market model that will resist te temptation to have unnecessary junk jammed into it.

That's why I bought a used D200 instead of a D90.

Despite all the wonderful things I've heard about it, the thought of the money spent for the technology to put that into a camera in that price range means that they *HAD* to have cut corners elsewhere.

I would have bought the D90 if it didn't have the video. The D80/70/60/40 all were in the same sort of mindset, the D90 isn't really pricier save some natural increase for features and inflation, so where do they cut the corners to pay for the video?

Thing is, my reasoning may even be flawed, but because that's where my thoughts and others I know do the same thing, will pass over on the camera because of that perception.

So why would I look at the D300s over the D300?

Nikon has passed me, and people who think in a similar fashion, over on another model.

Just my $0.02 US......YMMV.....8>)

I apologize, I am not as familiar with the Enemy's...err Nikon's line up as I should be :)

They also announced the D3000. Not quite as exciting being an entry level SLR. However, I am hoping that there is a D700x on the horizon to complete the whole lineup

As for video? I don't know. At first I thought it was gimicky and as was previously said: if I want a video camera I'll get a video camera. But using my lenses for video? Especially if I get a lens baby? Just an example I saw. (Not video from the camera but video made from multiple stills...anyways...you get the idea)

a d700x will be most welcome if it happens--will drive the d700 price down some so I can get me one!

DPReview says $2400.
