Hmmm, you would be having this challenge when I'm in the country! That happened on a previous street challenge, too. I'm not out of the city very often, so it's an annoying coincidence.

There aren't any streets in the country?

There aren't any streets in the country?

Nope. Just a handful of muddy cow trails. :-)

Is there an official definition of street photography? or is it just candids on the street?

Right from Wikipedia:
"Street photography uses the techniques of straight photography in that it shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society. Street photography often tends to be ironic and can be distanced from its subject matter and often concentrates on a single human moment, caught at a decisive or poignant moment. On the other hand, much street photography takes the opposite approach and provides a very literal and extremely personal rendering of the subject matter, giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life they might only be passingly familiar with. In the 20th century, street photographers have provided an exemplary and detailed record of street culture in Europe and North America, and elsewhere to a somewhat lesser extent. Many street photographers adopt a specialization. For example, some street photographers might emphasize the ugliness of modern society by depicting drug use, prostitution, and other forms of crime and/or exploitation. Others might focus on the humorous moments that usually go unnoticed. Either form is a constituent part of street photography."

I'm going to do some out of the box portraiture today... perhaps I'll get lucky and find some good street scenes while I'm at it. I'll keep my eyes open. ;D

I'm looking forward to this challenge also. Here are some of my own that I thought had more of an impact in color than they did in black and white.

Good luck defining street photography by the way. That's a slippery slope if there is one.

Oh man, what a missed opportunity. The Oregon Country Fair is this weekend, but I have friends coming into town. Talk about a place for Street Photography in color!

Oregon Country Fair (definitely NOT safe for work!)

I have to agree, Karen, that is an awesome example. I think the problem with so many street shots in color is that they get so busy with the architecture, cars, people, etc and this one is simple and gives your eye a place to rest.

Not sure if I'll do that one but good luck to those who do.

No offense intended but this image is what sends me running for the hills when it comes to a Challenge like this. Nothing here against the photographer but the voters, I must add.

Outside of this image being colorful...that's all that it is. It's a nice shot. It does nothing for me but it a nice shot. There's isn't much else going for it in terms of strong Street Photography. Perhaps at the most base level, that at best but hopefully this will be an SP Challenge first and NOT just a bright color color challenge.

I'll disagree with Steve on that one - I like it for the comp, the color, AND the "street" value. Has an intriguing balance to it, almost literally with the "scales" in the far right arch. There's the mystery arm in the far left arch as well. Street candid, if that pleases the Street crowd more, but definitely not portrait, studio, architecture, fashion, or anything else I can think of to label it at the moment.

And sadly, I may not have anything for this challenge - haven't been anywhere to shoot for street this weekend and the weekend is over, more or less. May try tomorrow after work, though.

ooooh the mystery arm...that changes everything. Just kidding...just kidding...just kidding...

It's an attractive image but I see little street value. Colorful arches shot at a nicely composed angle....eh. Pretty but far...far from an earth shaker if you boil it down. Again, pretty...colorful...eye pleasing but no depth. No offense, just an opinion but both as a shooter an a viewer I'd be looking for a lot more.

And therein, to me, lies the joy of street photography (and photography in general in my book.) I may see something in a photograph no one else sees; someone else might see something completely different. It's all good. :-) (And don't you wonder what solutions they might offer her, or why?)

I think you hit it right there. If someone showed this to me out of context, by itself, I'd say it's a good photo -- pleasing colors, bold shapes, good perspective, rhythm, use of thirds, and all that. If someone showed it to me in an exhibition of good street photography, it would leave me cold.

I think when the word "color" gets thrown into the mix, it changes the rules. Then you are not only looking for street value, but to me, good use of color. I still stand by my earlier statement in agreement with Karen, but I understand the arguments. Most street shots if done in anything but black and white, don't do tons for me because they are way too busy and your eye is confused between all that is going on and all of the various colors too. I'll be curious to see how the entries turn out and what wins.

Hmmmm...does it change the rules?

Personally, I'm tired of cliched Street Photography. The internet is bulging with it. I don't see how keeping the color should give it a pass.

As for the "mystery arm" in the posted shot...unless it's Elvis's arm or you think it might be his arm, I see no mystery. Not sure what it does for the shot either or any way. I didn't notice it. To me it's just there and doesn't affect me but I won't argue if I does something for other people...

I just hope people go a little deeper than what did well on DPC's last Street Challenge.

Or you could just accept the fact that everyone's learning here, including you, and quit trying to instruct people. Jeesus, man!

It all depends on which part of the definition you're using.

For example, some street photographers might emphasize the ugliness of modern society by depicting drug use, prostitution, and other forms of crime and/or exploitation. Others might focus on the humorous moments that usually go unnoticed. Either form is a constituent part of street photography."

If you're looking for a decisive or poignant moment, it's definitely not there. If it's giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life the might only be passingly familiar with, then you've got it. The definition as list in Wikipedia is too broad. I was hoping for more of a photojournalism type of street photography challenge--I was hoping the pictures would tell a story.

Man!

If people want to learn how to swim, I suppose they could stand in a puddle just to get things rolling. I'd say, if you want to learn how to swim, get in up to your waist. Perhaps you'll truly accomplish something.

You know, people always bitch about the lack of commenting so, I made a comment. I gave an opinion but if it's something they don't like or GOD forbid...negative they get all bunched up. At least I'm being honest and putting down some thoughts and reasons but if you want to stay in the bullshit zone, have fun.

Perhaps some robust discussion would be welcome. Sorry for taking something seriously...

vawendy-That's the wiki definition and I think it's lacking in so many ways. Wikipedia is great but in some instances it leaves a lot to be desired.

Sorry, Steve. I don't even know how to put into words what's bugging me. I'm not against serious discussion. If I have a problem with what you write I should identify it and either talk to you about it privately sometime or just get over it. Later,
