So I called Allstate (home insurance), and they will cover it with a $500 deductible + $70 Penalty each year for 5 years for filing the claim.

So with the claim for $1200 - $500 = $700; $70*5=$350; $700-$350=$350.

So basically Allstate will pay for $350 of my camera and I have to cover the rest. Which is not necessarily bad because I was worried that the penalty would be more expensive than the cost of the camera.

Sometimes insurance companies just frustrate you. But at least I will get some money.

So sorry about your loss and in your frickin driveway too...I live in the middle of nowhere and often leave my car unlocked at night, though NEVER with camera in it. Unless I'm at a client's place with a 200-m gravel driveway.

Good luck!

BTW what is a favela?

I'm gonna go ahead and hate your insurance company for you. I think having a penalty for filing a claim is absurd since you have to pay for most of it yourself, and there's already a deductable. Basically they get to raise your deductable to $850 temporarily just because you're actually using your insurance.

I know. It's ridiculous. But they get away with it because when you don't file a claim for 5 years, they give you a "discount" of $70. But when you file a claim, they take away this "discount". They call it a discount, I call it a penalty.

You'd probably know them as a shanty town. They are really badly built houses on the edges of town that house lower class residents. A lot of times they are constructed on rought terrain too, so they fall down all the time but the people have no choice but to rebuild in the same place because they can't afford anything else. The favelas of Rio are pretty easy to identify in pictures if you look at the city. They are above the city and overlooking the valley. pedrobop could probably give you some more firsthand knowledge, though.

That's a bummer about how the insuarance settled out with your camera though. I guess $350 is better than nothing though :/

Ask a local pawn shop for the form and fax# to send your info to all the shops in your area listing your merchandise and serial numbers.

That is what I did and I got my backpack and equipment back a year after it was stolen out of my house. It was found at a local pawn shop.

Good Luck!

So, I just finalized all of the insurance claim paperwork today. I have my new camera, a 50D (instead of a 40D), and am happy to be shooting again.

Because my insurance company declared the 40D "obsolete", they paid for a 50D for me. So I feel that I got a cheap upgrade. I *almost* feel like my camera theft was a blessing. Anyway, I got it back after a month of waiting.

EDIT: They ended up paying $1200 for the whole thing, after the deductible.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear insurance replaced your gear and you're shooting again.

Sorry for the tough luck. Sometimes I feel these days that if it's not nailed down, someone will grab it.

Glad you filed the police report. When my first digital camera got stolen, the police kept trying to say that I had "lost" the camera. I think they are under pressure to keep the official crime rates down.
