Despite our best efforts, spam has become a regular occurrence here in the forums of DPC. We are trying a few different things to stifle future spam posts and have implemented a number of features to prevent it. However, there is unfortunately nothing that's going to completely stop real people from signing up, confirming their email address, and posting some garbage that none of us want to see.

I just wanted to make a quick announcement to explain a new feature that will let you guys help us fight the good fight and participate in the war against spam. On the bottom left of each post, you will see a link to "Report this post as spam". This will serve as a quicker method of purging spam from our forums.

I wanted to make this specific announcement to also ask that you please use this feature diligently. Since posts/threads will automatically be hidden at a certain threshold, this puts the power to hide content in the hands of our users. The use of this feature will be monitored, so please use it only as necessary.

Thanks,
Langdon

Thanks Langdon! Hopefully a majority of us will never see this 'work' as if I understand it, it will be gone, or well on its way, by the time I log on. And if I can help it, I will. Again, thanks!

Nice way of implementing it. It's becoming a huge problem everywhere. I suppose it must be turning a profit for someone somewhere.

Sounds like an idea for the SPAM challenge. Submit something that can't be seen.

The comments issue was definitely related.

And yes the Spam challenge was inspired by all the recent spam we've been seeing. Hopefully it receives more than 10 entries. ;)

I think it would be better to humbly ask for a button to judiciously report split infinitives. ;-Þ

Great way of hitting the spammers - whats the threshold for a posting becoming spam or is that secret - regardless - a hugely positive approach by Langdon and SC and for it I applaud you.

we're actually debating what that threshold should be right now. we will probably have to let the new system have some shakeout time before that number is set in stone.

I think we should have weighted clicks - like if I click it, it counts as 10 clicks. I have a nose for spam. ;-)
