I am sure I'm not alone in looking at the DQ'd photos each challenge to understand what went afoul of the rules.

In the Personality challenge, one photo by PiechProductions that I quite liked illustrates my point.

got this DQ explanation: "You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer's description of the photograph (aside from color), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken."

Was the problem the border? The background? Something else? I can't tell but would like to know.

So here's my website suggestion: In addition to the standard error message, I would like a description of how each DQ'd photo violated the rule. I think it might teach us all through example more about editing rules, than the rules teach us themselves.

There aren't that many DQ'd photos, so it wouldn't create a lot of work. And the SC process of validation already determines explicitly how the photo violated the rules.

Ultimately, I think it might lead to fewer violations, and probably fewer validation requests, which in turn would reduce the work of the SC.

Note to the SC: You guys rock!! Keep up the great work!

Folks voicing support:
Judi
Bear_Music
Yanko
JulietNN
DrAchoo
NathanW
eschelar

I would call them "supporters" but the term seems so, I don't know, maybe ... athletic.

I agree. When I first signed up here I suggested something similar. It was a DQ page that you can sort through for different violations. That way if you were unsure about a certain section of the rules you could just go to this page and look at how it was being interpreted.

As for the photo in question if it was because of the border than that's a change of interpretation,IMO. I'm pretty sure I've seen other photos in the past get validated with body parts hanging over the border.

i think it would be for the hands holding onto the border. something had to be removed and added . that is what i think anyways, btu good idea!

I have advocated something like this on a number of occasions myself, always to deaf ears, apparently. I envision it as being something like the "decisions" that are appended to the rules of golf, where they explain situations that got appealed to the ruling authorities and enumerate the specific reasons behind the upholding of, or reversal of, the earlier decision. Yachting has something similar. Any competitor can study the rulings if s/he seeks to understand the rules in detail, and any jury can (and does) use the rulings as a resource when adjudicating cases in real time.

I think it's a great idea...

The background of the shot in the original post was drastically different than what was in the original... that's the reason for the DQ. The original background had distinct square patterns in it (it may have been a quilt?), and the background in the submission was completely different. The border was just fine -- the person who submitted it shot the hands over a black poster board-like material.

I totally agree with this idea...no matter how experienced you are, there are always times where you wonder....is that legal or not...and without having to bombard SC with questions...there is not other way of comparing and checking.

So lets do this SC....!

We've been asking for this for a long time. Perhaps one day. :)

Thanks for the specific response on this specific photo. I learned something.

It seems clear other posters in this thread could have learned something from it as well. And to generalize, let's do it for ALL DQ's! There seems to be a mini-ground-swell of support for the idea. If Judi, Bear_Music, Yanko, JulietNN and his sneeziness DrAchoo like it, how wrong could it be?

Believe me when I say it will reduce the SC workload!

While I don't enter many contests, I do enjoy seeing what goes down in the bottom 10 page, including DQ's. Plenty of great shots get moved to the bottom of the pile because of a dq and I would otherwise miss them.

I also would appreciate the information to help me understand better.

As the Dr said, it's been asked for for a very long time - put me down as super-supporting this request.
