I just received my first comment. "Over exposed and poorly lit."

This made me very pleased. The image was a long (2.5 sec) exposure using only available light (a candle). The effect I desired was that of a candle lite subject. Without post production dodging the overexposed candle is not possible. Since I enjoy the effect I would not have done so if it were possible.

Just as I saw in the Macro exercise (where images that did not fill the screen with a single subject were considered not to be macro by the ilinformed)once again if the image does not fit into a ticky tacky box it is worthy of ridicule.

That boosts my feeling of creativity. As well as my belief that we seem to be in a lock step world.

Perhaps it might be useful to look at exposure information and titles and see if an effect or mood were attempted. Or it might just be better to look at strictly perfect pap.

Nah. The photos should stand on their own. If the voter's didn't "get" your photo, then you have to do a better job next time.

That's why I like the challenges, they're forcing me to think "outside the box" ... and hopefully take better photos.

It's like telling a joke, if you have to explain it after the fact - you failed to tell the joke correctly.

I'm not exactly sure that voters not "getting" the photo means the photographers job wasn't good. Photography, as technical as it may be, is art, and art is well... subjective.

What you wanted to convey may not have been apparent to everyone, but then again, people might "get" something out of it that you didn't even plan on.

That's art... The purpose of it is to express yourself and hopefully get a reaction.

In the end, good or bad, a reaction is always better than indifference... ;)

I feel that the title goes hand-in-hand with the photograph. A good title can make up for a mediocre picture.

For example; On A Sunday is just your average shot. However, when you read the sign and then think of how it applies to the title, it's actually a great little shot -- well above average in my eyes. If it was hung in a museum with a plaque stating the title. I think it'd be highly respected.

There are just some people who will put down other photographer's efforts no matter what. Unless you have a suggestion on ways to improve a picture within the rules of the competition, then maybe you shouldn't make a comment.

No don't censor yourself like that, we have to take the good with the bad. I'm a mediocre photographer at best, but I'm not going to get any better if I only hear "what you think you should say".

I appreciate a well thought out criticism, but I also learn a hell of a lot from the upfront, honest, first reaction.

Some people are just a little mean spirited. I don't mind a little constructive criticism but I don't care for the "you suck" attitude. The comment on the last challenge I received about everyone who ever had a digital camera has done this just doesn't sit well with me. I would much rather hear "You might want to take a more original approach next time".

I don't know if the masses are corrupt but you sound pretty corrupt! I am old enough to be your mother and I don't appreciate that kind of language. Now you have your opinions and I have mine. I don't recall asking for you to voice yours.

It doesn't even deserve a response. Adults might enjoy posting without interruption.

I never thought I'd be siding with a redneck. ;)

That's a good one. I might be a redneck but I try to show at least a little class unlike some folks. I'm really more of a female "good ole boy".

If someone told me my works 'sucks' I would be glad that they were saying how they feel even if I don't like the sound of it. I'm able to get past the language and see the point. It would cause me to look at my photo again and to see where it could be improved, and maybe it could or maybe not. I would welcome any comments even if I don't prefer the language. this is too great a site to nitpick over how someone communicates. Let's just enjoy the challenges. And by the way, there were only 22 entries so far for the current challenge. Are some of you a little afraid to show yourselves? Oops, I think I'm way off the subject. Sorry. I believe well thought out titles are a good thing, They can help communicate the photographers intent.
