Ok the new 500D is comming out, but is it going to be any better than a 20D?
I can get a second hnad 20D for half the price of a 500D I dont want movie feature

Tough choice. If you can, I'd save up just a tad more for a 30D. Otherwise, the 500D has the latest technologies and would be worth it in that regard.

I'd save for the a full sensor camera, and keep the 20D as a backup, sooner or latter we all going for full frame,
my 2 cents.

you're not relly comparing like for like here.

There is the matter of the 30D, 40D and 50D in the xxd range to be equivalent to the 500D in the xxxd range. I would say that you should be able to easily get a 40D for less money than a 500D, which would give you a higher frame rate than the 20D and a much newer processor.

That said, in terms of 'bangs for bucks' the 20D is an excellent camera, but getting long in the tooth by any standard.

Have you considered looking at refurbs ? Is there a Canon Outlet site in NZ ?

Easy decision, go with the newer technology. You will be much happier with the newer processer and decreased noise levels at higer ISO's. You will have almost twice the megapixels as well.

but will a 500D have better noise that a 20D?

I would certainly think so.

As it will have newer tech. the noise performance could've been improved, but 500D is still an amatateur camera (I guess), and the 20D a semi-pro, so a canonmann should answer that. However, bear in mind that if you buy a 20D body you'll have money left for a better lens than the kit-lens I assume will come with the 500D.

The 500d is built with a brand new CMOS sensor which will be dramatically better with noise it also has a digic 4 processor which is two generation above the digic2 in the 20D. Te LCD screen on th 500d is 3" to the 2" on the 20. Also the 500D has the self cleaning dust sensor unit which is very nice. ISO on the 500D can be extended to 12800

The only plus the 20d will have is the alloy body and frames per second 5(20D) 3.4 (500d)

DOn't know about where you are, but here in teh states a 500D is going to be about $800-900? A used 40D can be had for $700 or less, a 30 for $500 and a 20D for $350ish.
The 20D is soooo old and slow (in processing) that it's perhaps not worth $350 (when $200 more will get a lot better body).

Look for a used 40D - it's a ton better than a 20D in every way and cheaper than a 500D
