this December I was in the states. I weft into a walgreens, and most of the orange juice was set to expire months ago in October.

interesting as stores aren't allowed to sell stuff past the expired date.

off topic a touch, but I feel your pain, there was a convenience store that I used to buy yesterday's paper from all the time.

Since the topic is 5 years old why not take it even more off topic.

I found a cow's heart in the streets of Brooklyn today. Happy Valentines day to me.

you just found it on the street?
02/20/2014 01:09:18 PM · #31
Yup. I think it may have fallen out of a delivery truck. It was frozen solid.

It doesn't have a date on it so does that mean I can sell it? :P

we have a shop in Palmy " Reduced to Clear" sell all sorts of short dated packaged food biscuits etc nothing wrong with the product. Most of them very coservitory dated,. Never had a problem with short dated film either

Like its not coming ot of dumpsters. Got a big bottle of Morcona coffee the other day $5 tastes ok to me.

Properly refrigerated dairy products are supposed to remain "good" for at least 5-7 days after the "sell-by" date.

Most packaged and canned products are perfectly safe long after the "best by" date.

You can mix that in with a little beef fat, some low grade meat and a little binder and make a Salisbury Steak!

Nothing wrong with heart. It's a good muscle. It's not like it's a liver or a kidney, and people eat THOSE.

Do you folks think restaurants and especially small diners throw out food due to when it was prepared?

@ David Ey....generally, to avoid tossing out food, restaurants (good ones anyway) only cook food when someone actually orders it. They have, or should have, a walk-in fridge, deep freezes and other huge-ass fridges in which to store the prime ingredients, which are supposed to be kept well-wrapped. Old stuff should get tossed. Now, this is based on my experiences at a fine-dining restaurant, where the chef and owner keep a super-close eye on food quality.

Now, as for other dining establishments, esp small diners and greasy spoons...well...nothing against them in particular, but use your judgement. If the place looks shabby and run-down out front, things probably aren't much better in the kitchen.

@ Mike...I've had heart, it was roasted so it tasted like roast beef. I don't recall it being exceptionally tough, and the cook wasn't exactly sensational. The only thing that tipped me off as to what it really was, were all the holes in it.

No, it's not all that tough. It's very lean. Treated with respect in the cooking it's quite delectable.

Heart is really nice Italian style, "sufritto" with a nice red sauce, some grated cheese and red pepper flakes.

I can add only one thing to this conversation...
Many years ago I bought a sealed container of fruit juice from a small grocer. Didn't look at the date -- my bad. I poured a glass of the juice while multitasking and didn't notice the huge glob of mold until the glass was on my lips. I watch all dates now. 20 years or so since I learned that lesson. Sometimes food out of date is ok, but sometimes it isn't! Don't risk your health. BTW - I've never bought or drank mixed fruit juice since.

There are still store who are selling expired food so we better check the expiration date. This can lessen your cost for foods that you might be buying because its already expired.

Went to Walgreens to buy my little sister some of her favorite ice cream (black cherry with chocolate chunks) today, brought it home. She was all happy as she served herself, and a couple of minutes later tells me her stomach hurts and that the ice cream tasted a little funny. I take a spoonful and I almost barf. I swallowed a little, I couldn’t believe my sister ate a bowl full. I think she was just eating it for me, I felt horrible and when I look at the expiration date it was 4 months expired! So I’m a little furious, because I just fed my little sister poison, trying to do something nice for her. So I go back. The cashier at the Walgreens, is surprised and gets the manager. The manager doesn't seem too concerned, she tells the cashier to refund me the money and just walks off. Which really pisses me off, yeah you refunded my money but what about my little sister that has a tummy ache and diarrhea, at least apologies for your stores mistake offer some medicine....shit do something. On my way out I tell them I’m going to buy some medicine for my sister somewhere else, but if my sister doesn't get better in a day or so….. I'll be back! Terminator style. I think tomorrow I’ll talk to another manager, and probably contact the local food and health administrator or the FDA.
