Wow, can you believe it? I've just scheduled the one-thousandth challenge! That's a pretty huge milestone. The challenge is set for roll over tonight and was scheduled in place of our normal Exclusive Challenges. That means there will only be one challenge this Wednesday... but don't worry! It's a challenge that absolutely every user on DPC will be able to participate in.

And that's the idea... we want absolutely everyone possible to participate! We've scheduled a challenge that is so open and accessible, that we're hoping to make it our most-participated-in challenge ever! Here are the numbers we're hoping to beat:

Best Of 2005
Total Number of Entries: 829
*** Update *** Record broken: 1130 entries
Total Number of Comments: 18,062
*** Update *** Record broken: 66,490 comments
Total Number of Votes: 359,220
*** Update *** Record broken: 552,169 comments

Nude III
Average Number of Votes Per Entry: 485
*** Update *** Record broken: 496 comments

Masters' Free Study
Average Number of Comments Per Entry: 72
*** Update *** Record not broken: 60 comments

It won't be an easy task, but I know it's possible, and we just can't do it without your support! So get your submissions ready and turn on keyboard voting to prepare for voting and commenting next week. We've got this!

If you have a moment, I urge you to browse our rich history, and view our beautiful archives! Also, I threw together a new page accessible via the Photos/Browse menu where you can page through all of our award-winning entries to date! And for those of you with Cooliris (formerly PicLens), you can browse all the winners full screen.

For some extra information related to this milestone, the Help/About page currently reads the following: "To date, 104,333 users have submitted 203,866 photographs to 999 challenges." The actual number if you factor in all of the removed entries is 205,466 -- that's an average of 205 entries per challenge!

I really want to thank all past and present Registered Users, Members, and Site Council.

Seriously... THANK YOU.

Without your interest and dedication over the past 7 years, none of this would be possible!

All the best,
Langdon

The entry form will make most of us liars...

"Yes, this photograph was taken with a digital camera on or between Mar 4 2009 and Mar 10 2009."

Im going to be taking mine this week. I dont have anything I would call my best that will be good enough to enter this one. If it cant have the exif data current between now and the 10th then I wont enter I dont think. I cant go against the talent here with what I have now. hahaha.

This is, unfortunately, an attitude I was worried about.

I'd love to see people more interested in showing off what they think is their personal best photography, rather than what they think DPC would think is their personal best photography. The ribbons are just going to go to the usual DPC candy anyway, so why worry? It's not about winning.

I really hope people really do just focus more on what they themselves love within their own photographic idiom.

I can dream.

I think it's clear that anytime up to and including the 10th is A-OK!

aww, drat!! I got so excited when I saw this. But then I realized that I can't enter anything old--I never saw a need to keep the original file.

Oh well, it'll have to be something new--but somehow I don't think I can come up with something in one week that rivals people's best from the last umpteen years... Great fun idea, just not too good for newbies.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to seeing what other people have!

Wendy don't worry, it's not just newbies. I lost 10,000 shots in a hard-drive crash, got some back but not the ones I really wanted (including the original of my most faved shot here). Just do what you can, but pleeease enter SOMEthing! :)

Man, this is gonna be rough for me. I got my first ever (above 0.3 MP) digital camera Dec 2005 and I was hardly doing anything very interesting with it for the first couple years. I just got my DSLR this past Christmas... I don't have much of a portfolio to draw from...

Nicely put -- that shifts my focus in a positive way and will make the whole experience more enjoyable -- that is, if I decide to actually peruse many months of thumbnails.

EDIT: I *do* wish I could take a photo I entered before and rework it, but I'll abide by the rules.

Langdon, this is a great idea for a 1000th challenge. Congrats to all who work behind the scenes and to all who particpate here on the site.

p.s.
As an open challenge I noticed the challenge was running under Advanced Editing, but no yellow flag was put up . Thanks again
