i have submitted 16 pictures to challenges so far and asked for critique from the club each time, but never got any? so whatup?
04/29/2004 01:32:40 AM · #2
With more then 70,000 pictures to go though it's probably going to be awhile I would think.

Can we still volunteer or are there enough people?
04/29/2004 01:57:07 AM · #3
well it is about 300 photos per challenge and that makes about 300-600 a week and that is not all that much...say if ther was 30 club members that makes about 20 pictures a week per member... i dont see why it is overwhelming.. can someone correct me if i am wrong?

You've made 89 comments in the past four months which averages out to about 5 a week. 20 per week must be a bit overwhelming or you'd be doing that many, right? :P
04/29/2004 02:21:14 AM · #5
i find that arguement rather funny.. because i have no commitment to comment on images and i only comment if i was compelled too.. if a person becomes a critique club memebr he assumes a responsibility to make more commetns than he otherwise would, or if it doesnt work that way. what is the point of critique club.. please dont dismiss arguements with such pointless responses.. i have thought of applying to become a member but i wasnt sure if i were up to the challenge of it...
like i said if everbody who entered a challenge expected a critique that would make about 300-600 requests per week.. and i assume there must be about or more than 30 members that makes 20 comments per week.. and that is not overwhelming if my figures are corect.. please corect me if i am wrong but dont just dismiss it with weird answers that dont make any point at all...especially coming from a site council i find it against photographic integrity...
and even if members of the club were making 5 commetns a week i should have gotten at elast 5 comments by random chance.. even that much would have been resonable..but i got none...and i dont mind it at all.. iw as just wondering why it takes too long.. and i appreciate a straight answer..

My point is that yes, 20 is a lot. Critique club members are still volunteers. I think what the club asks for is around 5 a week. I'll try to keep my photographic integrity in check in the future.
04/29/2004 03:23:40 AM · #7
thank you :)
and since you have already calculated that i comment 5 a week i can qualify to become a critique club member.. two birds with one stone...

ps: i also like to correct your calcualtions because i have been a member only for 3 months and that makes 89 \12= 7.4 comments.. that way i meet and exceed the requirement for crituqie club...

I think some of the problem stems from the fact it is so easy to ask for a critique.

I may do my submission, not really care about the critique, but hey, there's a nice easy box to tick so what the hell, I'll tick it. The people who really want the critiques get lost in the overall noise.

I've stopped ticking them now unless it is a photo I particularly want extra feedback on.
04/29/2004 04:01:46 AM · #9
hey natator, actually you may be right.. and in the future i will only click the pictures i really want reviewed...by the way i have absolutely no problem with not having received any critiques from the club, i was merely curious, and wondering the member count of the club, because say if there are 100 mebers of this club and i still dont get any comments from them, than i can confidently question the efficiency of such club, but if they have limited members than i fully understand..
but everything on this site seems to be done with government style precision such as dozens of counsils and administrators communicationg delicately in differnt timezones and stuff which i appreciate and understand, but critique club seems to be rather ungoverned and free of rules which doesnt fit into the composition, that is why i was asking about how many members and how many requests per week there are.. so i can understand and may be rest my arguement...

One other thing that I think would help:

As the week goes on, if you get some decent comments that help you understand how to improve your image, UNCHECK the box.

If most of us did that, it would focus the attention of the critique club on the photgraphers that feel they need feedback, but aren't getting any.

Here's some quick stats :o)

There are currently 74 critique club members, of which only just over 20 have made a critique in the last month. On average, there are about 200 requests from the open challenge and about 100 requests from the members challenge per week, making approx 300 a week. Given that the active members tend to average about 5 critiques a week, only a third of images that are requested actually get a critique...

this is exactly what i was asking for.. interesting thou.. i wish members would have been a little more enthusiastic...anyways thanks a lot manic..

Matt
Is the coding still set up such that CC members who request critiques on their own submissions are first in the list?
(Which is perfectly justified btw - I am just asking)

Theodor
You really don't seem to come over as very appreciative of the voluntary nature of the CC. If I were still in it and was assigned one of your images after reading your posts above I'd spend as little time on it as I could and move on to the next one. They do this for fun and for free so take it when you get it and think about returning the favour in general by making more critiques of your own.

I find that because I make time to make a lot of comments I am able to ask people to return the favour if I'd like a few on an entry of mine.

What goes around comes around.

well kavey... feel free to leave as brief of comments as you wish on my pictures... my intention wasnt to hurt anyone.. it is late at night here.. if i did hurt anyone's feelings, i apologize..

No worries, I'm sorry I was probably too harsh. Got out of wrong side of bed this morning!

All I meant was that it's easy to feel disappointed when you don't receive a CC critique but it's surely better to thank the club for what they DO do than to chastise them for what they DON'T do...

Motivational techniques 101!

But you should go ahead and join them - I'm sure they'd be happy to have a new member.

I left because every now and then I'd be assigned an image I really didn't wish to critique. Since it IS all voluntary I wanted a way to be able to skip it if I so desired. Since many felt that was inappropriate I decided to revert to giving comments on my own to those images about which I felt I had something to say. It was also being bandied around at that time that there should be a minimum number of critiques given by club members to stay within the club. Although I could sometimes give 50 in a week, I might then go some weeks without giving any. That also seemed to be at odds with the way those running it wanted to run it. Which is absolutely fair enough.

What I try and do now is give comments to those images I like but can also provide ideas and feedback about.

Whilst it's possibly true that the lower scoring images might need help the most it doesn't give me any pleasure to sit and look at really poor images. My own are bad enough! And in some cases images are so awful that I find myself thinking "If you can't see that this image is so appallingly bad that it's not worth entering what can I possibly say, with my limited talent, that will help you be able to see more clearly?" and that's not a good frame of mind from which to comment.

So I just go merrily on my way on my own and it works for me!

:o)

But I do think the active members of the CC do a good job and am grateful any time I receive a critique.

i see what you are saying kavey... i am sorry too, i probably was a little harsh myself..
it is all good now.. i might actually start my own little critique club: i will call it the "happy world of criticism club by mehmet".. so i will leave comments that way..:)

i think the critique club has kind of died off (apologies to those who still actively participate) because most people have little to zero restraint when it comes to ticking that little box. it's just become automatic, although people should only select a few entries a month for a critique (IMHO).

i was an active member for quite a while, but i've changed my tactic to spending more time commenting on images during challenges. oftentimes as a critique club reviewer i found that i was not able to add anything more than what others had already said in challenge comments, so it seemed that i was doing nothing other than saying "i agree with so-and-so."

also, and i don't mean to scold, but i find it very interesting that so many people are quick to criticise the lack of "work" by the club. personally, i have two jobs, two challenges per week (and i don't even submit regularly), and a new camera that i should be out enjoying. i contribute what i can to the site, which i would venture to say has been a chunk over the years, and would appreciate not being told i'm not doing enough.

mehmet, i feel compelled to point out that your 92 comments on over 2800 votes means that you've left comments on approximately 3% of the images you've viewed. i have found that i have learned much more on this site and others by taking the time to submit more comments. it forces me to view the photos longer, and look at them a bit more intensely. i think the site would work out much better for everyone if they set a comment and critiquing goal for themselves and stuck to it.

no problems, guy. i just get frustrated when folks seem to complain about others.

good luck on your club. just really look at the images as you vote...that's all i'm really askin'.

some weeks i participate more than others. i've also left about 20% comments on my votes, which is quite a bit. i do what i can when i can.

04/29/2004 08:01:47 AM · #21
According to my profile I think I've commented on over 50% of those I have voted on, however that doesn't quite tally because, before I was a member I commented on several that I couldn't vote on. It's also a percentage that is dropping since I joined the site at a time when work was limited and was often able to comment every entry in a challenge. These days I usually comment around 20-40 entries in a challenge but occasionally have a spurt of energy and comment several times that number.

I really enjoy commenting and it's so nice to have some recipients PM me and enter into dialogue about their image and my comment.

If I remember correctly, when one challenge ends and the shots from that cycle into the Critique Club cue, the oldest challenge in the cue is cycled out so there are only the latest two challenges to be critiqued. As a member of that Club I try to do at least 2 critiques a day, I could do more but I don't want to be a piggy :)

So, if anyone wanted to join the club, how would they do it?

It's a great idea that should be kept alive if at all possible, imho.

I am an inactive member of the CC. I used to love to do critiques. I could only manage one a day at best. I would think about the image overnight and it would take an hour to write the critique. Why did I lose interest? 1. (silly reason) Several of my page long critiques were not marked helpful. 2, (almost as silly reason) unpleasant private message responses. 3. (somewhat silly reason) some pictures didn't weem to be serious attempts. 4. (maybe ok reason) some pictures had plenty of comments, more than I could add to. 5. time, dial up, family etc.

Maybe I'll be back someday. I appreciate that the membersip roster includes inactive members. There used to be a # of critiques per week requirement. Each critique is better than no critiques.
