I have been looking at my entry from my free study and have been scratching my head. I was expecting some low votes due to its contenet, because well death isnt pretty and i know shots like this are not for every one, however when I look at the average vote from commenters (6.0) vs average of all users (4.7257) that is a very wide gap. Aside from subject matter, what could have been done to help this shot.

If you mean help it get a better score in a free study, I doubt that much more could be done to overcome the "I don't like the subject" response. The B/W is great, the composition is great. The only things I can think of that might help a little would be a touch more contrast and for the whole thing to be sharper. A high score in a DPC free study typically means pretty and/or amazing (as opposed to thoughtful and/or provacative). Emotive can work, but graphic (although fake) human death generates negative emotions is a lot of people and they interpret that as a bad thing.

It didn't come up for me in voting, but such a gap is not uncommon for a subject that you know will not have a neutral effect on people. Obviously the commenters thought you conveyed your idea well. I agree with them. The unusual angle and partial view helps to convey the idea. I suspect many of the low votes were not saying your image was bad, but rather that they found it disturbing, and they didn't know how to respond to it, so no comment. It wasn't the pleasing scene that people like to give high votes to. Don't let the sub-5 score bother you. You did well with this.
