Are there prior challenge results I can review? or? - how do I learn what comprises a stock photo with the subject matter of cooking? Thank you.

This is the first time we have had this challenge subject. You could look at stock sites like shutter stock for ideas.

Welcome to DPC, Good luck in the challenges.

The easiest thing in this case would be to go to corbis.com (a stock website), and search for "cooking".

Or, try looking at any food related ads you see in print. That is the purpose of stock photography. So when a designer needs, say a photo of a turkey, instead of hiring a photographer or shooting the photo himself, he goes to a stock site and buys a picture to use.

I've been paying attention to the advertising that bombards us constantly and the amount of photos used that are probably stock shots is incredible.

Do you think voters will DNMC photos of just food? That is food not actually being cooked or completely cooked. For example will photos of veggies and fruits sitting beautifully on the table be DNMC'd?

some voters will probably DNMC those types of shots ... I'm torn as to which way to go with this challenge ... most likely I'll fall in line with the masses and do an actual "cooking" shot, but until I've taken the images and see what I get I can't say for sure ...

I doubt there would be much DNMC backlash on a quality image of food regardless of "cooking" being visible in the shot or not. I would say this kind of thing is a good place to start if you are looking for a decent score:

you just a gotta take a picture of some cheekin' stock, or maybe some beef stock. like you find in a soup kitchen or a brothel.

What amazes me is that I've seen a few that have been "screendumped" and inserted into publications still with their watermarks. Needless to say the publications got into hot water.

You would totally love Photoshop Disasters. The archive is located on the left side of the page to go to different months.

I've even seen some of those cliche splash shots on billboards about water conservation.

ekk, so you reckon that a plate full of cooked food, is going to tank?
01/09/2009 08:42:07 AM · #15
I would consider any food related shot that I might see in an advertisement, magazine or cookbook to meet the challenge. I would even consider a photo of cooking pots and implements with no actual food in the scene to fit as well.

neither do I ... I kinda feel like I have to shoot the "act of cooking" something ... but my kitchen doesn't look like a restaurant and there's not much room to set up lights and get a good angle for a shot unless I knock down a wall!

I don't see this as an issue at all. I'd say, "think of this as a food photography for stock" challenge. It never occurred to me, reading the challenge description, that it was asking us ONLY for food-in-the-act-of-being-cooked. Of course, I'm famous for being out-of-step regarding the relationship of topics to descriptions, so you can disregard me with impunity.

Pawdrix has done some very nice food shots, incidentally; here's a couple:

... this was my "Asia" shot ... maybe I'll attempt some other sort of food image ... I think I'll have a hard time with the act of cooking ...

I'm hoping that a lot of people take it to be food shots and not necessarily "cooking". I am going for a food shot, so hoping that I dont get a million DNMC votes =)

Darn, just finished the pizza and didn't think to take pictures of it. Do you think one of the grease-stained but otherwise empty box would cut it? :)

I understand the challenge description to mean "food being cooked", and I've shot and submitted accordingly. Just not worth the DNMC votes.
