Here is a database which is basically run by user's posting their own experiences with various cameras.
Your D40x looks to be a strong camera as the average of shutter actuations until the shutter dies is 16,075.
Hope it will last you another 30K!

Wow, I did 16,400 in three days!!! My camera finally died at about 300k....and that was a Canon Rebel XT.
You need to try harder unless you have a.......oh, sorry...you do have a Nikon ;)
(Just kidding on the Nikon dig, nudge, nudge!)

Wow! My XSi is still alive.. I bought it new about 2 months ago, and it already has > 9000 actuations.
I guess I should freeze it for sometime now, just like the credit cards;-)

I just check the number in the most recent downloaded image files... the last one was named _MG_9297.CR2. Unless someone knows a fancier way.

Just be aware that it rolls over at 10000 and you start over again. I've got over 21,000 shots and assumed it would last hundreds of thousands of shots and got concerned when I saw the peak of the bell curve about 10,000 to 15,000 for most cameras until I realized that was current count rather than count when it died. There are very few red counts for most cameras. |

If you accidently put in a card with an image already on it...then the count will start from that number...so you cannt rely on your last number downloaded. The only true way is when you put your camera in for a service you can request that give you a shutter count as they can read it...don't ask me how...! That's what I do.

| The 'true' shutter count can be extracted from a file header of every image. Download this simple exe and click on 'Shutter Count', select your most recent picture and your shutter count will appear. |

There are a few tools to get the shutter count from a camera. I prefer the free utility, PhotoME, which is the most thorough exif reader I've come across.
However, there are no common utilities that can report shutter count on Canon DSLR's, (except 1 series bodies), as the field is encrypted or so I'm told.

Who ever wants to know I guess. Just make sure you tell me in the email who you are just in case I get an email 8 months from now and I forget that I even said this... hahaha
The Picture doesn't have to be of anything really and actually if you take a picture of all white or all black it will keep the file size down. All I need is the images Exif data.
And BTW the program I found doesn't work for all cameras so it's really up in the air.

oh i'd be interested, as i bought my S3 Pro used and the guy i bought it from didn't exaclty know the count, could of been around 20k, plus the number of shots i took during the almost 2 years i own this cam, so could be around 50k in total...
i'll shoot you a pm.
