Quite often when i'm taking photographs in a public place strangers will ask me why .
more often than not i'm shooting for a dpc challenge .. surprise surprise .. !!
when i'm hit with the question i'm often stumped for an answer ..
i'd be interested to hear how other ppl respond in that situation .. :)

I usually say I'm adjusting my camera settings for a -2, 0, +2 EV for and HDR image to enter in a DPC Challenge that I will hope will not get too many DNMC comments. I then add that the multiple image process I'm using is against the advanced editing rules set forth by SC so I will likely get a DQ.
This usually ends the inquiry.

I say it's a homework assignment for a photography class. Nobody has ever reacted with more than a polite, disinterested 'oh.' |

One day I was driving downtown and found a stack of metal chairs, on a sidewalk, that I thought was cool.
Soon as I started shooting a little asian lady pops her head out of a window and starts screaming at me
in some foreign language.
What do you say to that? LOL
My best guess is that she may have thought I was getting evidence to slap her with a fine or something.
Who knows. I just promptly left with a big smile. I wonder how long she worried about what I WAS doing.

I haven't been asked a lot but when I am I just say I am taking photos because it's a beautiful or interesting subject. Sometimes I will tell them about my website and tell them I photograph everything I see, that everything makes a good photo.

| Once while shooting candids at flea market, the manager approached me and voiced his concerns about my being associated with the state tax department collecting evidence. I assured him I was just a hobbyist only interested in pictures of the "characters" at the market. I considered this a rather unusual question coming from a Elvis impersonator |

| I usually say something vague like "I like rust." or "Studying the life cycle of columbine." Eventually I'll meet someone really neat who takes this as a conversation starter, so far they just want me to prove I'm not pointing "that thing" at their kids. (I don't often point cameras at anyone.) |

I tell them that I've been stalking them for days, and they're really ruining it for me by coming up to me and talking to me.

| People usually don't question why I'm taking photographs, but I'm still self conscious all the same. Because I live in Santa Barbara, most people assume I'm a Brooks student. I suppose it would be easy enough to tell them I am, but when I'm asked, I kind of like telling them that I'm just trying to learn photography on my own. My plan is to make cards with my blog address so that I can let people know where to find my photographs, especially if they're in them, but I haven't gotten to that yet. |

ugh i hate it when people do that. and if i respond in a way they can relate to (not the spiel  kenskid gave:) they go on to ask if they can 1) see my photos 2) get copies or 3) the most insulting, if they can play with my camera. GRR!! |

I usually reply that I just like taking pictures and that pretty much ends it. But these days I can get lost in trying to get the shot and don't get asked that often. Maybe they think I'm a pro on assignment and don't want to bother me!

| Not often asked anything; less often asked why. I have no stock replies and usually just say what comes to mind which is usually "I'm not sure yet," or "I'm waiting to find out." |

I work night shift, so I'm usually out during the day. I get more of "Wow, I wish that were my job!" to which I reply, "So do I!" After that they get a confused smile on their face and keep walking. I also get old men trying to "talk shop" with me and ramble off all these obscure specifics to make them sound like they know what they're talking about. Half the time it's total crap, but I don't feel like correcting them. They like to tell me how they would shoot my shots to which I just say "Thank you." Suggestions like how it's a bad idea to take flower shots when it's overcast and cloudy. Okay buddy, you go take your blown out flower shots, I'll take my giant soft box in the sky with controlled flash lighting.

There was this one time I'd found a pretty nifty location that had an interesting ashtray attached to the wall. All it needed was the human element, so I was sitting there patiently waiting for the right person to come along. A dude walks around the corner and sees me pointing the camera in his direction. He turns around to see the ashtray then looks back at me, I must have looked like a tourist, cause he says "Don't they have ashtrays in your country?" I said "course we do! That's why I'm taking a photo of it!" : )
But most times I tell people that ask, that I just like to take pictures. I'll sometimes explain that I'm a street photographer and ask if they're interested in seeing some of my work. If they are, and most times they are, I'll give them a moo card that has my flickr address on it. |
