I recently purchased a 16GB CF card. I've used it a couple of times without any issues.

I just noticed, however, that when I format the card in the camera, it formats to 8GB.

Just to test I formatted in my computer and it formatted to 16GB. Back in the camera and reformat and it reads just 8GB

Anyone know if there is a 8GB limit for the 5D?

I think I remember something about having to format in the computer then put it in the card to get more then 8GB? Are you sure you have the latest firmware? My biggest card is 8gb so I cant help you.

I once used a new 4gb that only got recognized as a 2gb. I called the 800# for the cf card company and they had me send it back (postage paid) and then shipped me a new one. Apparently the one I bought was an older model (explains why I got it so cheap, I guess) and it didn't work right with the 5D.

Not near my manual to check so I can't answer your 5d gb limit question, and I've only used up to 8gb myself so I don't have direct experience with using 16gb cards with this camera. But if the card manuf. has a # to call, try that out, maybe?

Hi David,

I have always used 16GB cards on my 5D and have not encountered any problems. I also always use the 5D to reformat the cards each time and eveything has been fine.

What card brand is it? Mine is Sandisk. If it's different, maybe you can Google specific issues on reformatting that particular card. Hope this helps somehow. :)

Finally figured it out. New firmware came out in March, v 1.1.1

I was on 1.1.0.

New feature of the firmware - ability to format large capacity CF cards.

it's all good now.
