Please someone explain this to me.

Why is it that some (frankly republican types ) feel that when there is a "patriotic event" (a fundraiser for troops or something like that) the featured performer has to be a country group. Here is a newsflash to conservatives. COUNTRY MUSIC AT EVENTS IS LIKE PUTTING A WHITES ONLY SIGN ON THE DOOR.

There is an event this weekend that I have sent a contribution to benefit military families (I can separate my views on the war from supporting our military families) that I won't go anywhere near because the full show is country music. At the RNC what was the featured music COUNTRY (and kool and the gang and bon jovi music that wasn't licensed) ALL of the 911 tributes COUNTRY...

WHY!!!!

Don't y'all understand that country to some is like a bullet to the brain pan just as gangsta rap is to some of you ( don't get me wrong gangsta rap gets the same reaction from me as does country)

LOL! Love that insight.
And a tad of controversy to boot.
Lovely RANT.
It may be a subliminal message. Now, I agree with you, but in no way does that mean the country artists are racist or anything - but there is a subtle message with the use of county music.

To me, some country music says "South" which sometimes says "Confederate flag" which is sometimes interpreted as bringing us back to the old days before the emancipation proclamation.

EDIT to say: Some people are natually going to be defensive about this because there's an assumption there -but of course this is a huge generalization which could be argued and possible even turned into a locked thread ;P

Side note: On occasion, I enjoy Johnny Cash, Willy Nelson, and artists like Neil Young who sometimes seem a tad country. Personally though, country music in general(lee) doesn't appeal to my ears.

You know ... there is absolutely no racist intent (my best friend LOVES country music I am trying to convert her) BUT from where I sit ... yeah ... I just cant tolerate it ... not my style... and because of that there are events and causes that I just get turned off on.

ETA on my iPOD I have some willie ... some cash some Charlie Daniels ... BUT those folks aren't playing many community events ... I just find the trend funny

Politically, country music is the new Wagner.

Come to where I live... endure the Stampede... if you didn't hate country music before you would afterwards :)

that being said, I guess there is a preception out there that country is more conservative/patriotic... where as many other genres are more liberal in nature (AGAIN VERY BROAD GENERALIZATION)... of course can we say "save a horse, ride a cowboy"?

I'm pretty sure my wife listens to country when I'm not in the car. Personally, finding a CD of that in her player is just as bad as finding a nudie video on my computer ;P

While driving long stretches it seems that radio stations in areas of very low population density play more country music than stations in more densely populated areas.

If my observation is right, I wonder why. Can this be extended to populations of white/black people living in rural versus urban areas?

I'll keep my opinions about country music and the average IQ of its fans to myself. ;-)

So many conclusions to be drawn! :-D

I would agree that generalizations are half truth. Dylan, Ray Charles, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen.... a few favorite untypical "country" artists, who do it very well.

Yes he did.

Personally, I think the republican music should be "Vader's Theme" from Star Wars. It goes well with their message.

I have heard that higher intelligence can be measured in those who listen & enjoy music as opposed to those who do not...... but it may depend whether or not one may be wearing a cowboy hat.

Well - you should love this. Please try to watch it to the end (it is short - maybe a minute) as that is really where the impact comes in at.

BTW the song at the end is very powerful the first 100 times ... after that for me at least it just gets turned off ... like any other song that I have grown sick of

because country music gives you Lee Greenwood's song and rock gives you Bruce Springsteen's song. I honestly cannot comment on rap. Reagan's erroneous belief aside, Bruce's USA song was less than positive in view. I will refrain from giving my opinion in regard to politics but I will say that I own Bruce's album and not Lee's.

If, by that, you mean, blindly accepting of whatever the government says and does, then, yes, you are correct.

I understand that you don't like "white" music. I do find it a shame that in this day and age one can actually say that a choice of music is racist. I will say this much.. i am glad you associate patriotic country music with my race and the woman degrading crime glorifying rap with yours. If it were the other way around I would feel ashamed of my race. To say that you give Country the same reaction as the vile filth put out by gangsta rappers is to say you think that both are equally reprehensible.

The Star Spangled Banner was originally a barroom song. They play that everywhere, but some don't salute the flag when they do.

I don't think Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land is considered a "country" song, and it is certainly celebratory ...

Phil Ochs' The Power and the Glory isn't a "country" song either, and is ultimately a positive statement, even though it recognizes the country's flaws as well ...

Originally posted by Phil Ochs:

Here's a land full of power and glory
Beauty that words cannot recall
Oh, her power shall rest on the strength of her freedom
Her glory shall rest on us all
