hey deb, just got your message (sorry for beeing a bit late but i partied hard last night so i got up just half an hour ago...lol)
i'm sure there will be a tram or bus or something to the messe but since i've never been to köln myself i don't know which one or anything.
so when are you planning to go?
i'm going on sunday btw.
09/21/2008 10:11:40 AM · #9
If you're going on Sunday, then I figure that's when I'll go, too. We'll have to figure a place to meet and a time, yes? I will try to figure out how to get to the messe from the Bahnhof.

Edit to add - now if we could just convince Oliver and Christiane to go on Sunday as well... :-)

Where are our friends from holland, belgium and france here? c'mon people there'll loads of stuff to drool over...;)
09/22/2008 06:27:35 AM · #11
It's the "stuff to drool over" part that I'm worried about. I don't need any new toys. Want, yes, but need? Nein! Still, can't pass up the opportunity given it's in my neighborhood, more or less! And I did discover that the U3/U4 runs from the Bahnhof to the Kölnmesse. So that's how I'll get there.

Where shall we meet and what time on Sunday?

dunno, maybe like between 9 and 10am at the southern entrance (that's where you'll get off the metro i think)?
my two pals and i will have a longer way from jena, so i guess it depends how well we 'll get trough the highway and city traffic...
i'll drop you a pm with my mobile number so we can be in contact.

eta: just saw it's entrance east where the metro station is.

You say that here in the states and they put you on a "special" list (they tend to overlook the italics). I guess that will have to do.

Maybe I should write a long rant to Pentax about how they have shamed their ancestors- is that too stereotypical.

Sorry, we already have our VIP passes :)
Besides that it's to busy at the weekend

Would have been nice to meet you! Maybe another time. Unfortunately, I have to work during the week so I can only go at the weekend.

Rats! Just remembered that I signed up for something awhile back that is this Sunday in Frankfurt. Rats!! So if I go, it'll be on Saturday, and I'll still probably go. I just won't be able to meet up with you, Christoph. Bummer! (Say, that would be a good idea for a challenge - bummer!)

Oliver - if you get a chance, report back as to whether it is indeed worth the trip up to Köln and the price of full admission (since I didn't get a VIP pass!).

hey deb that's a shame, would of really loved to meet you up...maybe another time.
as for the ticket, i just saw there's a weekend discount (16€/12€ if you buy ahead online) so it's not that much really.

Good news on the ticket - I'll check that out! Now for the important question - will they let us in with cameras? :-)

Hopefully Oliver will report back this evening or tomorrow. And we'll definitely have to pick another time and place to meet up again, Christoph. Maybe time for another GTG in Germany?? I'm willing to travel!

yeah another gtg here in germany would be great!
problem is i'm going to be moving out of my parents house next week (finally!) to start university in leipzig. so time will most likely be an issue for me for the next few weeks/month, but i'll see.

hey oliver and christiane (oh and you gary), how'd you like the show? was there any free beer and if so at what stand? ;)

Question for anyone who was already there - is there a way to find things without buying the catalog, or is that a "must have"? And what do you recommend as "must see" locations?
09/26/2008 07:23:37 AM · #24
I have no time this year but two years ago:

They did let us in with cameras.
And it was easy to find your way around without a catalogue.

Must see are imho the lens sections of your particular brand. And Hasselblad. Try to get your hands on a Hassy and take a few shots. You will never want to let go of it, the sweet hushy swish of the shutter is a massage to your eardrums and the sharpness of a wallsize view of a shot with the 100mm macro will blind you for the rest of the day. Dont be shy, dont be afraid, just grab it and shoot it, they won't sent you to jail.

09/26/2008 09:31:54 AM · #25
Good tips, Sander! 'Cept for the shooting the Hasselblad.. well, maybe I'll go look. I'm quite secure in the knowledge that I most definitely cannot afford one. :-) Had not even thought about looking at lenses - may have to see if they've added anything for Canon in the Image Stabilized arsenal. The older I get, the more I really appreciate IS.
