So, I was doing a google search on my name and BLAM! I found this:

The Wars of the Green Berets: Amazing Stories from Vietnam to Present

The back cover has my copyright information. I'm so excited that I don't even care I only made $.20 for the picture off istock.com. What makes it even cooler is that it is a picture of me.

The only drawback of the whole deal is that I'm portrayed as a Green Beret... the Marine in me doesn't like that.

The picture is actually from the Pride challenge in 2005:

sempermarine, if you see this I hope it gives you hope... if you keep working on your photography skills and learn how to look tough like me then you might get published. Well, maybe there isn't much hope for the looking tough thing, but you've got some photography skills... maybe... kind of... sorta...

Shouldnt you have made more than .20??

That is awesome though!

That's cool. Also the way stock photography works. The shot you get .20 for may be used in a weekend church flyer, or on the cover of a book. You just don't know.

Congrats, Todd. I like the photo.
I don't mean to be rude, but this makes me understand why some photographers dislike these stock image sites. Twenty cents? It's one thing to undercut the competition, another to essentially give it away.

EDIT:

That puts the twenty cents in another light. :-)

Cool and congrats. Well ok not on the .20 cents. But it's a start.

Congratulations -- maybe if you write to the publisher they can at least send you a couple of copies!

Well, you "know" when you agree to the contract and upload the photo ... actually, there are some limitations even on the microstock licenses -- a book which goes best-seller and prints 400,000 copies will yield somewhat more to the photographer under most micro-stock licenses, while the image is also affordable for some veteran self-publishing a run of 500 copies of his memoirs.

How cool is that?! Congrats!

Thanks! I still can't get the smile off my face!

The way I look at it is this... if I wouldn't have had it out there I wouldn't have ever been published. To be honest, if someone would have written me and asked me if they could have used it for free I would have said yes. Photography isn't a business to me... unless someone offers me money.

LOL! We posted the exact same thing almost at the exact same time, CassieDoodle! :)

By the way, I made $1.20, not $.20! I'm loaded...
09/03/2008 03:13:01 PM · #13
The other potential here is that you said you received a credit on it. That now makes you "searchable." Who knows?

Congrats big time, thats really good news, and yeah, it may not be alot of money but for me its more about the exposure ( no pun intended!) you receive, especially if you are just starting out. Hope it continues to get even better for you, and it does give the rest of us hope!

That's really cool, congrats!

Bummer about the Green Beret thing, but at least they didn't say you were in the Navy.
