Ok.. i signed up to shutterstock and they want me to send them a government issued ID ie. passport or drivers licence... do you people actually send this information in???? i'm a little worried about it thats some serious id stuff to be giving out.. is it safe? |

They're hiring you as a contractor. If you don't provide it, they can't pay you. Yeah, its safe; and yes, we do. :)
ETA, I don't work with SS, but its the same with anyone you contract to sell through.

Yes (there should be some instruction on how the respective site wants it somewhere on their site, but basically it boils down to scan and upload).

I photographed mine and sent that in with a blacked out face. They accepted.

and it is merely a safety initiative so people don't try to buy their own photos (and make a profit) and so they know where to send the tax information.
