I imagine that when the rules say "before that challenge starts", they mean before that challenge starts voting. In that case, you could have taken, processed and entered your member challenge image before the opens are announced on Tuesday and then decide you want to do one of the open challenges. If you're going to leave your Member challenge in, you need to post a message that it doesn't count for this side tournament before it goes into voting on Sunday night.

Can we get a ruling on this, EstimatedEyes?

yes, but that would mean deciding to do the open challenge before you even know what the open challenges are (if you wish to play the member challeng, that is, and are unsure if it'll score well)

Forgive me if this has been answered, but the following scenario is legal right?

enter member challenge, watch it flounder for 2 days, decide to bail out and enter open challenge - notifying you to disregard the already entered member challenge?

I don't think so. Rule #3:

3. If you enter more than one challenge, your first entry for the week counts, unless you post a message before that challenge starts stating otherwise.

No. You have to decide which challenge to use for the tourney before voting starts. ETA: What EBJones said -- you have to PM or post before rollover on Sunday if you enter the member challenge and don't want to use that entry for the tourney. (If you do want to use the member challenge, or you don't enter anything in that challenge, you don't have to do anything}

Originally posted by hopper:

No -- just before you know how it is scoring. The open challenges will be announced Tuesday, and the deadline for entering the member challenge is the following Wednesday Sunday.

ETA: Edited Rule 3 to clarify ambiguity pointed out above. Thanks.

Week 1 challenges: Cardboard Box, Lawn, Still Life IV, Free Study 2008-07

Remember: the first challenge you enter this week is the one that counts, unless you tell me otherwise before Sunday rollover. If you enter Cardboard Box and want to use your Lawn, Still Live IV or Free Study shots for this tourney, you need to post or PM me. If you enter Lawn or Still Life (but not Cardboard Box) and want to us your FS shot, you also need to post or PM me before rollover. For all other situations (i.e., only entering one challenge this week, or entering two or three but you want to use the first one you enter), you don't have to do anything. See Rule 3.

Good luck everyone. I have a feeling I'm gonna get bounced early from this challenge. My sugar entry which I really like is hanging around 5.3 (but I know exactly why); my Cold entry, which I thought was a POS that I wasn't even going to enter, is at 6.11. Go figure.

Sure glad we didn't start with the "HOT" challenge, minds tanking big time. I'm kind of, lets say unable to get out to take a shot for this side tourney. Going to have my wife bring my camera up, maybe I can get a nurse to pose for me....Good luck, I really thought I might have a chance to beat the big guns with my lower average....Not giving up yet.....

In response to a PM, clarified Rule 3 in the OP that your "first entry" is determined by the submission deadline, not the time you actually post your entry. In other words, if you enter the Sunday Member Challenge, that is the one that will count, unless you tell me otherwise. (Probably should have just said it that way in the first place!)

The OP now reads:
3. If you enter more than one challenge, your first entry for the week counts, unless you post a message before voting starts on that challenge stating otherwise. ("First entry for the week" refers to the submission deadline, not the actual date you submit your entry.).

My hot entry addresses heat as a physical phenomenon and not a metaphor. That's obviously not such a hot idea. Despite having only a 4.8 average on which to improve, it looks like I'm striking out first time. (I'm around 4.3 after 60 votes)

Hot does not count. So no worries you still have a chance.

Free Study 2008-07 Counts This Week!
freakin_hilarious just PM'd me with a question about the FS, which I had overlooked this week. Since the FS ends on Thursday, July 31, it is part of the first week.

If you want to use the FS for your week 1 entry, post a message in this thread or PM me before this Sunday.

(I had originally pegged this as a week 2 challenge by mistakenly looking at the challenge announcement dates, and forgetting that the week 1 entries would not come in until the week of July 27, when voting starts on Cardboard Box, Lawn and Still Life.)

Can we change ours minds before the mind changing deadline? And I kinda think you might get 100+ requests in this thread now!

Yep, you can change your mind, but if you think you might, even just a little, I'd ask that you just wait to PM or post until you're sure. (I'll change it if you ask, just trying to cut down on the number of posts and PMs I have to keep track of!)

Yeah, I know. Maybe I should've made THAT one the default. :>P

Sorry to belabor the point, but, when exactly is the first week, from start of submission to end of submission? Also, I'm assuming any challenges that are open for submission during that week, whether started before the week or during the week, are acceptable?

I concur with Larry and will add if there is a 24 hour challenge during these dates you need to post a message here that you want your score to be taken from that challenge.

Bump for a reminder to post or PM before Sunday if you're going to use your second or third entry of the week for this tourney. (If you don't understand what that means go back and look at the Original Post and Rule 3.) Also, a reminder that the Free Study is in the mix for this week, just in case you missed that announcement from earlier this week.

I had actually thought about this too. My plan was to use the average as of Monday morning, and then update that each week as we go along. So, yeah, the challenge gets harder and harder the longer it goes, because the survivors have a slightly higher hill to climb each time.

Question:
Since I'm not entering the member challenge, will my previously recorded average (this weeks)
be superseded by my new average on Monday, reflecting my not so "Hot" entry? :)
