I was really excited about this challenge, and I have a dozen ideas in my head, but here it is Saturday night, and I still have not gotten anything recorded. Tomorrow it is supposed to top out at 110, and I am not sure I will get anything shot at all. I am not turning in unfinished work this challenge, is anyone else in the same boat?

Zeissman, I know the feeling. Not for this challenge (I submitted late this afternoon) but I have been in the same boat for other challenges. For one, I had already submitted and then unsubmitted again. And I'm glad I did.

As for this one, I still have a gazillion ideas, but I think I'll just enjoy the rest of the weekend and see how my current entry will do.

I have not shot my picture for the next competition. I know what I am going to do but it is going to take me some time to set it up. But I have all day tomorrow. I'm just hoping that is enough.

Here are some shots I shot this week:
Tuesday night (11.06)
Soccermatch (14.06)

I have been in the same boat the last three weeks, had ideas but not the time. I have submitted this week but I have to give thanks to my friends for helping me, even if it was a kinda weird idea.

I did mine late this afternoon. I''m just so happy with this new camera:)

This is a photo I took with it this week. I didn''t touch this thing...I just made silly girlie noises and took a few FAST photos:)

I'm in the same position. No shots all week; busy all weekend. Maybe a miracle will happen and I'll have time to shoot something on Su and submit it befroe 9PT.

I took this shot the other day... but I am not sure that it ties enough to the theme... I tried to use the shadow from the dock, what do you think?

Dockside

In my opinion, it is a beautiful photo but it would not fit the challenge. The shadow is supposed to be the subject of the photo.

I took the challenge to mean that shadows had to be present, not that they had to be the subject of the photograph. This is another example of interpretation I guess. I am predicting some interesting shots this week. Voting should be interesting.

But hey, do not listen to me..... I frequently get comments that my photo does not meet the challenge. I just interpret differently. I like to think I am in my own little world. :-)

I thought the photo was a great representation of the challenge. I suppose the photo I submitted isn''t going to be doing well either because it''s not a blatant picture of a shadow..but there are many shadows present. I took shadows of things on the ground and they were just boring, quite frankly. I''d vote higher for a photo such as dockside.. Just my opinion.

I agree. My submission this week is not a photo of shadows, per say, but they are present and do make the photo more interesting because of their presence. I suppose I will be voted down again this week as well.

I agree with BAMartin...

I would not need to see the shadow as the central (and perhaps only ) subject. I cannot clearly define WHAT I would say the role of the shadows should play until I see the photo. It's up to the photographer to WIN ME OVER to their way of seeing things with their skill.

I expect to see wide variations of how much the shadow is the subject or the shadow is the background or the shadow is the "dark" twin or whatever.

I won't predict what "shadows" should do well or what will get hammered but it will be interesting to see..which is why we do this I guess :-)

do you think we will be yelled at for having only ONE shadow?

I remember your curves submission David and that would be a great use of the shadow challenge.

As a matter of fact, going back over that challenge there are a lot of photos there that would do well in the shadows challenge!

I just submitted mine, I was walking down the hall and Boom there it was, the perfect perspective and some killer shadows :) Shadows can be hard especially when one hasn't had the chance to use his neighbors studio lights :)

Well, I expect to get creamed next week.

I had a half-dozen ideas, most of which didn't pan out at all for one reason or another. Just getting some light was a huge issue between cloudy days, the inability to find colored light bulbs stronger than 25 watts (or colored things that wouldn't melt to put in front of stronger lights), and my laughable attempts to locate reasonably-priced photography lights. (At one place they kept them in a special locked room. They told me the price of the least expensive light, and I told them not to bother unlocking the room.)

I finally managed to make one of those options work yesterday, but the result was pretty boring until I pushed the brightness and contrast a lot. As a rule, stuff like that gets beaten up in the vote, but I like the result, so I can stand to look at it for a week, regardless of my score.

I can't take that one. My camera informs me that it isn't doing anything until I remove the lens cap.

That's just pedantic - tell you camera to lighten up a bit! ;)

Probably. There will always be some sort of disagreement about the interpretation. If you get "yelled at", so will I. Mine only features one shadow too.

I have learned something on this site that I think applies to the voting when it comes to the interpretation of the challenge.. I have learned these things based on the comments I get....

It seems that quite a few voters look for ways that your photo does *not* meet the challenge rather than ways that it *does* meet it. When I post a photo to a challenge here, I try to *not* allow the challenge interpretation to be abstract in any way. When I look at the challenge interpretations on the photos in each challenge, I usually comment if I think the interpretation is weak... This week, there are a few photos in the challenge that just happen to have a road in them... I didn't think some of those photos were strong interpretations of *my* concept of 'on the road'.

I think Hokie may be the one who said it best somewhere around here earlier... We are not professional art critics. Hokie mentioned the term 'easter eggs' when looking for something wrong with a photo. Some of those viewers who comment on photos will find an easter egg, or something that is easily negative about the photo, and they will comment on it.

On the good side of this issue, it should help everyone learn to look out for the 'easter eggs'. Some of these 'easter egg' comments are correct and some of them are just made up when looking for an excuse to down vote probably...

There are several 'easter eggs' that I see here every week... The first one is the 'cliche' excuse... If you have several photos in a challege of the same subject or theme, there are ALWAYS those who can't handle it and they comment and probably vote negatively on it. Something that is not ordinarily 'cliche' will become cliche if there are 5-10 of them in the same challenge... The other part of the 'cliche' issue is the fact that probably 90% of the photographs taken on this planet are of kids, pets, and flowers. This makes these subjects 'cliche' to some. I'm not saying that there can't be an extremely excellent photograph of these subjects, however. I think that anyone who decides to photograph these subjects should consider making their photo extraordinary in some way... This will help when the ordinary Joe voter stumbles across it for comments... If *your* flower, child, or pet photo is very unique in some aspect, It may inspire the voter to think about it just a little.

Just some random thoughts... have a nice day :)

Well stated John! I see object of the challenge as two-fold. First, to stimulate creativity, but within the constraints of the challenge subject. This forces us to attack subjects that we might not have otherwise. It also causes us to view the quotidian with a slant toward the challenge subject in hopes to find a pearl somewhere in life's oyster. Secondly, it helps us to improve through the sometimes-useful responses that we receive from challenge members. Responses may not always be useful or put forth with tact, but personally, I'll take whatever feedback I can get. If I digested objectively, then it can be either dismissed as tripe or useful for learning.
