I just got a 40d on Sunday evening, and haven't had a chance to really use it much until today. I instantly noticed that the shutter sounds very loud and what can best be described as "squeaky". I compared it to a video on you tube and I think my shutter definitely sounds squeaky.

I am just going crazy or is there a problem?

I took a video with my Canon A75 and uploaded here: //home.comcast.net/~lykofos/dpc/MVI_0171.AVI.

If you have a 40D, please download it and take a listen and tell me if yours sounds like this. Thanks.

I bought it at a local store, so I can easily take it back if necessary.

Your shutter sound is normal. There is also a setting that can control the noise level for the shutter (but I'll have to look in the book as to where it is, lol!) It sounded really loud to me when I first got mine also. I actually used it to take some shots at my Uncle's funeral (my Aunt wanted them). It sounded like thunder to me, but no one else could here it!!!

Hmmm, maybe it isn't as audible in the video as it is in person. I had one of my friends listen to the camera, and he heard a definite squeak towards the end of the shutter sound too. Almost as if something in the shutter needs WD-40.

I'm gonna stop at the Best Buy out where I work tomorrow and test out their floor model, so I actually have something to compare the sound against.

Hey hey! Good to see that you're still on here. I was indeed away for awhile. I had been spending all my $$ on building up the truck and other toys, but now I'm back into photography with a vengeance. PM replied.

Sounds ok to me dood! I thought mine sounded a bit odd when I got mine, coming from a 350D. I thought it sounded a bit like robocop walking...

ISSUE RESOLVED / CONCLUSION:

It was indeed a faulty / malfunctioning shutter. I guess every once in a while, one gets through the quality control process. I took it in and compared it against the display model. On mine, the shutter sounds normal at the beginning of the actuation, but towards the end there is always a higher pitched "friction squeak" type of sound that was very obvious when comparing it to the display model.

2nd test was to put the camera in high speed continuous mode w/ no CF card and manual aperture and shutter set to 4000. Clicked both my model and the display at the same time, and my camera's fps speed lagged significantly behind that of the display model and was much louder. Got it exchanged for a new one on the spot. Tested it in the store before I left, and the new one's shutter is smooth as silk.

Great! I just listened to your video and was going to comment that it sounded very loud. I was very surprised at how quiet the 40D was compared to the 20D. I haven't even tried 'quiet' mode yet as it seems that is only available when in Live View and I have that disabled. (would need glasses on all the time to see it and very rarely do they leave the desk)
