I have started to design a website called "Taking Action", so far I have been running it off of www.wetpaint.com, but if I can get enough hits, then I will be able to launch the site via my own server, right now it has the extention .wetpaint on it, that may soon change. it is a website based on photoshop actions. My friends and I have gotten togeather and created actions, free ware, free downloads, of photoshop actions. You don't even need an account with the site. All of the sites capability's will be available to non registered users except for discussion forums, and uploading own personal actions.

So, you go onto the website, go to the gallery, choose an action to help you with editing, click it and download it's readme file. Then just plug it into photoshop! There are five up right now, but were still uploading .atn files. If you have a minute, you could check the site out here or at:

//takingaction.wetpaint.com/

Thanks!

Thanks, this is the stuff I need to hear before I get it up with money. Okay, so you say that when you download the .atn files, it appears as what? And what type of computer are you using, PC or MAC. Also, what browser did you download it with, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc. And what did you download. If you can give me that information I can fix it...

ok...using pc - windows vista, toshiba laptop, internet explorer. I read the .doc file, then clicked on the .atn file..it opened a new window and never went any farther...so I clicked and "save file as"...only option is to save as an .html file. When looking at that after save, it opens to nothing again just like when I clicked in on the site. It is the same for all 5 actions.

You have to open a second page to get to the download link for the action as well as an how to install document.

They download fine... off the second page.

That is a bother, having to go through extra pages.

Would rather enjoy to see preview images. One thing I hate about looking for actions is horrible or no preview images.

Lastly, I tried the five actions, and personally I did not much care for them. I have no need nor desire to use them for anything. Though that is not without saying that someone else may love them.

That's a PC/MAC thing. If I uploaded it from a mac (witch I did) you have to go to second page to download it onto a PC. If you don't want to do that, then either tell me to upload from ym PC, or buy a mac yourself lol! (I'll try to fix that...)

I don't know why it's happening... My only guess is that it's an issue with windows vista, not my file or the internet. Nobody els has this problem. thanks though. I'll get cracking so I can support the windows vista population as well...

Not for me they don't... This is what it shows for attachments on the second page;

I can assure you, an action can do a lot with a little space. They're like that... Like a little brother... And I'm glad to hear some of the downloads are working better!

It says the Gariety effect is 0k?

eta; okay, I just went to the "list all downloads" page and it says the .docs are Word documents and the .atns are unknown file. PC's can't recognise .atns, I presume?

IGNORE me, I'm blonde! obviously it knows atns if it runs PS... DUHHH

That bold .atn I clicked and it downloaded. No right click save as or anything just click and worked.

I am also using XP, and FireFox.

----
Wait, I clicked, the save dialog box came up, I dropped it in an folder (no where near my primary drive) Than I opened photoshop, and loaded action from said folder.

It would help me a lot if everyone could go to TakingAction.com for a sec and try to download one of the five .atn files from the gallery and comment here telling me what happened. thanks!

Okay, works in Firefox but not in IE.
05/31/2008 02:10:33 AM · #15
They all downloaded fine for me.

Safari 3 on Leopard.
05/31/2008 02:30:50 AM · #16
Yep, don't work for me on Windows XP and IE 7.0

I get the download page but if I click on the .atn file it tries to open yet another web page and nothing happens.

If I right-click and say "Save Target as..." it tries to save it as an .html file.

If I force it to be a .atn file instead of a .html file it doesn't show up in Photoshop Actions list at all.

A couple of other comments.
You might want to change the How to Install .doc file to a .pdf or better yet just a web page. I don't open .doc files off of web pages because it is too easy to get a virus from the .doc file. PDFs don't have this problem.

The user interface is poor and the design is very poor. Might want to work on the page layouts and formatting a little more if you want to attract traffic.

PROBLEMS:
I too can not download these actions. Are you uploading the .atn files directly to the site or changing them? Are you altering them in anyway? I'm using XP, IE7 on this machine but it's my son's computer so I'll try it on my machine later.

INFO:
BTW I have over 40 actions for PS if you would like some.

SITE SUGGESTIONS:
I would add a preview to all the actions. . It makes it much easier for people to see what they are getting before they get it. After clicking on the action name you could have the preview there (name page) before clicking on the actual download or have a link to a preview but I would think people would want the preview on the name page.

I don’t have a problem with the site layout. It looks like a freebie site with your information but its fine. Site layouts take a while to adjust and fix. I just clicked on some other sites at the bottom and they all look like yours so I’m assuming that there isn’t much you can do about the layout.

QUESTIONS:
Why do you want to pay for a site out of your pocket for other people to download actions and whatever else for free? To me it seems like a lose win situation. You lose money while we win free actions from the site. Why are you going thru this website company (with restrictions) when you could just go with some other pretty cheap server sites? You could even go with your local ISP server if you wanted free. You could upload actions to a sister site (like google or something else) and just link them from the free ISP site.

hey dirt, I lost all my actions last night, if your offer is open to mere mortals like me, can I have some of yours??? =))))))) <~~~~ very smiley face to let you know I reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally want some lol

I tried again to download. I went to the download page, clicked on the "auto silouette enhancer", then brought up the page showing:

Auto Silouet.atn (Unknown File - 2k)
posted by BingoGuy Yesterday, 10:23 PM EDT

The document part opens fine...but when I then clicked on the "auto silouet.atn" It brought up a new window that was blank...this is the link it showed in the address bar of the new window:

//attachments.wetpaintserv.us/JNlcDHX3B7eLJGrjIGTdaA%3D%3D2004

That is not a valid link/address as far as I would know.

That link works for me, open the downloads window and I can save it or open it.

The thing is it first opens another window in Firefox, closes it, and just then opens the download window, which might be consider as a pop-up for IE and thats why you cannot download it. Try adding wetpaintserv.us to your trusted sites..

It is a trusted site...the window opens but still remains blank... Must be an IE problem.

I tried it with Firefox and it did download something (which Photoshop seems to think is an action set and not an action). Still no joy with IE. The issue is that if the URL does not contain and extension (as this one does not) then it assumes it is an HTML page and tries to open it. Firefox on the other hands assumes pages with no extension are files to be downloaded. The problem could be solved by just adding a .atn to the URL.

No, PC can recognize .atn files, and even Linux will recognize them. But, your downloading with internet explorer, that's your problem. PC's will work fine, I can assure you, I have tried it many times on different PCs, they all work, the problem rests within internet explorer.

And moose, thanks for the tips on the website, remember, this is just the prototype so when I am finished, you can tell because the .wetpaint extention will be removed. The layout will be fixed, and that's a good idea for the document to be on the website instead of available for download. I never hough of it because the explenation on how to install was in the "What is an action?" info page. I'll make it a little more clear... You've been a big help, I will add the .atn to the script and see if internet explorer recognizes it. And yes, if you open the set in photoshop, inside is the action, you have to place the action into a set before uploading it. If you don't want ti to be in a set, tak eit up with adobe. Thanks again for your help!

Okay, here is the lowdown:

Taking Action is currently a free site where you can download actions for photoshop, there are not many up now, but when we reach more, we will pay to have the .wetpaint removed so we can expand on the site a bit. It will become a place where you can discuss, upload, and dow load actions. There will be contests to see who can design the best action, and a many more other action related time-killers. It will basically turn into a site revolving around the most commutable aspect of photoshop: actions. It is so great because anyone who knows photoshop can make them. When the site is officially up, I have my ways of advertising, actions will be available for download on any web browser, (even though it may be just a little harder on internet explorer but still possible) the contests will award ribbons and maybe even money. What you see now is just a basics of the website. I have the tools and I have the time. his can work, right now I just need feedback from the problems I'm having. What I'm doing right now is installing before/after images for a preview of what the action does. After that I will upload a better "HowToInstall" file directly to the website so you don't need to download it at all, (even though you still can if you want.) Then I will put more actions up, and more before/after shots, and advertise to increase the profile layout and the website it self. Thanks for all your help DPC!

NOTE: I'm now uploading a DPC resizer, so that you can open your image, edit it, and hit the play button on the DPC resizer and it will resize, crop and save so you can upload to DPC.

05/31/2008 02:09:30 PM · #25
Another thing you could do, is instead of uploading the .atn file you could just zip the files then upload the zip, that way everyone could download the same files and you don't have browser issues.
