lot of crap going on right now, nation wide, people tend to keep a low profile
and stay out of the "hot" areas..
migrants are being targeted, because the local people believe they have taken
away their jobs, unemployment stats. are frightening.

i havent watched the slide show so this may be a repeat of same.

I only saw two of the photos before my patience wore out -- for some reason the loading was very slow for me -- but what I saw was indeed disturbing.

FYI, goodman and GinaRothfels are active DPC members who live in South Africa; there are undoubtedly others. I've no idea if they live anywhere near these events.

EDIT: Oops, I see Lesley posted while I was composing my reply!

Zandspruit where they were looting and fighting the foreigners
is only 2 kilometers up the road from where I live.
One tries to keep a low profile , but it as Lesley says mob violence! Locals are also being targeted if they are too dark or dont have the right accent.

Definitely sad

The horrors that people are willing to inflict upon other people are sickening. Unfortunately, it's not limited to one country or region. In today's news alone, there's this story from Iraq, and another one from Kenya. For best effect, play Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" while you read. :-(

the really sad part is we are only here for a very short time on this planet as far as time in the universe goes. Ive thought quite a bit about this lately and wont get in to specifics why, but it is sad that we just cant get along and make the best of the time that we have here. I mean really, does it matter if your neighbor believes in something you don't, or don't understand. I'm using broad examples and dont want to start any debates but if your neighbor likes to pick their nose and eat it, doest is really truly effect you in any way shape or form? I know thats a pretty silly example but thinking about it, most of the crap that people do to each other is usually over something silly and or stupid.

And people wonder why I dont bother with the news much any more cause to me it the same S*** different day and Id rather waste my time going for a walk in a park than sit in front of the idiot box to find out who got killed for no good reason that day.

Anyway Im going to stop there as Im going to start ranting in a min, I just find it sad and frightening what "people" are capable of doing to each other...

I read somewhere that we are the only species that does these kind of things to each other.

Not true chimpanzees attack other chimpanzees for their land or if they get to close to what they consider their land, also they will cannibalize their victims...

Also most wild dogs and matter of fact a lot of mammals will fight off their fellow species if they come onto their marked land.

There is a similarity there that I just cant put my finger on...

Not true, we just do it in a more extreme way.

Yeah sure you can say chimpanzees are a close relative to humans, but most animals that live in packs don't like when another pack comes on their land. It's really silly when people say animals don't do horrible things to each other. people who do these sorts of things are animals, the people who you see protecting the wounded are the real human beings.

As a member born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) which suffered many years of war and is going through more upheaval now, and spent 15 years in Johannesburg South Africa, this is the type of thing that has been going on for the last 25 years and more, I cant watch the videos because they upset me too much, this type of thing was called necklacing, they put a car tyre around the victim doused him/her in petroleum and set him/her alight it is nothing new, people are just not given the facts. In Zimbabwe there are horrendous things going on today because of the elections along the same lines.

All I can say is that all of you who are caught up in this, lay low and keep safe my thoughts and prayers are with you all, I still have many friends in both countries.

i thin k one of the the many, many things that makes me so angry about this is that one man, robert mugabe, has almost singlehandedly destroyed his country and destabilised the entire region. of course,t here were other contributing factors, but he bears a great deal of responsibility.

thankfully, i think my in-laws are far enough away from the flashpoints to be safe.

I couldn't help but be incredibly surprised by these images; not only because of the shocking brutality in some, but because the images themselves are incredible. There's just such a tense feeling to them...

I would think that the majority, if not all, of the South African DPC members are comfortably ensconced in their houses behind high walls watching the Champions League final, supporting one of two English football sides. Most would have no direct interaction with the problems, unless their jobs dictate it, i.e. cops, social workers, paramedics, etc. And of course, the volunteer groups.

Personally I think that this has less to do with foreigners than than with angry people having no real outlet for their anger. A lot of people support their Liberation Movements almost blindly. And the people living in the informal settlements (government speak for squatter camps and slums) would not think about stopping supporting the ANC and using their vote to show their anger. The same reason why Mbeki implicitly supported Bob Mugabe.

And add to that a bunch of crazed criminals who have absolutely no sense of the value of human life. And you end up with a crisis.

i was also born in zimbabwe, lived there for thirty seven years, four of my seven children , were born there still have family including one son there, still go there on a regular basis although it is heartbreaking!
And yes the average South African is ensconced behind high walls, razor wire and electric fences! We have too, violent crime is a way of life here now, but it is still a beautiful country.

I think that most of us who were born in Zimbabwe and have a vested interest in both countries don't want a repeat of Zimbabwe's woes in South Africa.
