Wanted to stay out of this one but after reading about all the techniques to achieve soft focus I think I'll give it a shot. Just trying the different ways of achieving the soft focus will be interesting and fun.

I have been inspired! What a feeling. :D

Hold on, when did this happen? It's a normal adjustment layer, right? So are you not allowed to fade / increase transparency / partially undo it, even if no selection is used? Mind you i use Corel Photopaint which has a somewhat different workflow involving "objects" rather than "layers", but the theory's the same, right?

I do not see the point of having a challenge like soft focus and then allowing it to be done in post processing. Makes no sense at all.

Can soft focus not be achieved by just not focusing sharply on something? Would like to enter this but am getting nervous with the technicalities...

I think SC has locked it. He has been spamming the forums! It was a request for comments.

It was an idea that was rejected from the site council. I was promising, for every useful comment on my entries during voting, to choose one photo from the commenter as my favorite.

If you want feedback for a specific photo just create a new thread asking for feedback and you will get some :)

What about a soft focus filter for the lens ... anyone tried this?

Soft filter on ebay

Yep. :-) I have a couple of those (acquired as part of a package buying a used camera and lens). They work quite well.

Got my filter this morning ... will be trying it out over the weekend :)

As i'm sure a lot of people will keep telling you, there's a big difference between "soft focus" and "out of focus". Mind you, i'm not so sure the majority of voters will bother to separate the two.

My first soft focus was a shot of a caterpiller (titled Caterpiller Dreams,) I tried using a fog filter but the shots were really awful so I used a clearer image and tried soft focusing in post processing with a focus adjustment. The light was really harsh and flat. My score came in at like a 26%.

My second soft focus I used the fog filter more successfully, but the lighting was much more contrasty. It was taken around 10 in the morning. It was my image called Shadowfax. That one did really well, but once again the color was difficult to control because the fog filter creates a really ugly color cast.

I am not entering again, but I did purchase a Cokin set of soft focus filters right after my Shadowfax image. I probably should try another, using the Cokin filters, but I really hate entering and ending up with a lower score than a previous challenge of the same theme, so I am passing.

Anyway, the Cokin filters do not create that ugly cast that the fog filter does, and I have 3 different strengths of soft, which can be further combined by using two filters stacked, or all three if I really want soft. The set cost about 30.00. It is in their A series.

I purchased it from B&H, online, and got the filters the day the soft focus challenge ended. Since the horses were not out on that day, I could not retake the picture.

You can only do adjustment layers in basic. Sorry I should have clarified that. The typical approach to create soft focus in PP is to create a duplicate layer and apply the gaussian blur to it. Unfortunately that's no go in basic.
