My new studio with my new strobe lights :)

dwterry, thanks for the comments. Until you directed me, I did not even see the hands, I HAVE to be more careful next time... thanks again...

This one also was taken at my studio, and using one alienbee B800 strobe light.

My business partner Randy ( mangojuice)

Today I got my flash cord and tried it in my studio when Randy was setting our new studio computer. I hold the flash on my left hand around 3 feet away from the camera and took this photo. I probably will get wireless flash system later but right now money is so tight, cord will do just fine :)

I have been using the Lee and Rosco gels on my strobes and have been attaching them with blue tape. I decided to come with a better solution and ended up with this.

A plexiglass gel holder.

Details and more photos are on my blog

First time i have actually got the flash off the body when using someone as the subject (apart from the london gtg skate shoot - but that was pure flash anyway - not sun+flash)... quite happy with the results considering.

Purchased a set of radio poppers. Went out this past weekend to test em out.

I'm really liking them so far. It's really great to be able to control your lights at a distance and still retain TTL capabilities if you want. The ability to HSS is cool too.

Nice work. I've been enjoying my radio poppers as well ... cept for the one that took a dunk in the lake saturday (together with a Canon 550 flash). Ugh! New flash $390. New reciever $180. New cell phone $300. Total cost of the experience $870. Pictures? Priceless! :-)

You should pitch that to Mastercard as an idea for their next commercial! Seriously though $870 is a tough pill to swallow.

Wow what beautiful work in this thread...
Can I ask a question...
I have a Nikon D50, SB600, 2 small white umbrellas....

D50 cannot trigger the SB600 off camera, so I need to either get a remote trigger (cactus was suggested) or get a SB800 on camera to trigger the SB600 off camera.

What would anyone suggest? or should I get a SB800 with a sync cord (so it too can be off camera) and then it will trigger my SB600.
I don't do alot of portraits, so not interested in getting the big strobe lights...I'd like the flashes so I can take them easily outside with me.

I'm certainly not made of money, so please point me in the right direction.
I have to start working on my nieces Senior photos soon!

There are perks to both options. If you buy the SB-800, you also gain another flash unit, which will be essential. Trying to work with just one flash is hard. Two is better and three is best. But even with the SB-800, to get it off-camera you'll have to use a sync cord, as you already know - and that has potential to be awkward (cords lead to tripping, pulling lightstands over, not being long enough, etc.)

The Cactus system is cheap and, depending on which one you get and what flashes you have, quite dependable. However, it still leaves you in need of a second flash. On the plus side, you could get the Cactus system (1 Tx and 2 Rx units) and then buy a cheaper second flash to use off camera (Vivitar or a used SB-25).

Since I'm working on redoing my website under new hosting, with the intent of really launching myself into the photo business targeting portraits and weddings, I did some promotional wedding shots using my girlfriend as a model. The dress came from eBay for $25 and the flowers and veils came from a local craft store. All on the cheap, all shot using my three SB-25s and modified Cactus system with a variety of umbrellas, snoots, and my homemade beauty dish (which I love).

I've also been doing long-term freelancing locally and am currently doing a series of photos for a brochure. All of them have been lit Strobist-style with the SB-25s, using at least two and usually all three of them, mostly with umbrellas but sometimes hard as well. Here's one of those:

Hopefully the colors look okay on here - my "Save for Web" seems to be flattening the colors out somewhat lately, for reasons I can't figure out.

Gelling your flash ala strobist...
I have a post in this other thread.

Hi folks, I have a problem I am hoping someone can help me with.
I've had a sunpak 383 and the cactus trigger for a while, and have been happy with it. I just picked up a second 383, and got a second cactus receiver. But, I can't get both to fire. If I switch the little switches on the bottom of the transmitter, I can get either flash to fire, but both won't go at the same time. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong, or what may be the problem? I am hoping I am just having a stupid moment. :-)

Hi all, not a strobist yet, but planning on changing that soon. Already been strobe shopping at Henry's, they have a decent little starter kit for $150.

OPUS OPL-M401 40WS HOME STUDIO FLASH KIT

Anyone else out there have this kit?

Are the receivers set to the same channel?

hehe, no they were'nt. Yes, I had a stupid moment. I was lying in bed thinking about it and realized, if the channel can be switched on the transmitter, obviously the receivers should be switchable also...duh! Opened one up, and yup, there were the dip switches, on the INside! They are working great now! Oh, but Sheila just didn't see the thrill like I did, as I had her holding one flash, and running around the house watching them both fire! :-)

Okay so did my first wedding a week after I got my gear! I couldn't get both flashes to fire for most of the wedding but I ummmm.... I meant to go for a more rembrant feel! right? Haha anyways...

I'm pretty happy so far!

I'm and always have been a strobist.
all my images were done with this kit:
- 580EX, 430EX, SIGMA 500 + ST-E2
- Two umbrellas, stands, some home made light modifiers and reflectors
I'm very happy with it and I just need to go for a radio transmitter. The IR ST-E2 sometimes bring me problems when shooting outdoors.

I already found myself putting reflectors for the IR rays to reach the strobes ;)
