If you go to a place regularly to pick up takeout - should you tip?
Variables:
If they have a tip jar.
If you are picking up food for others.
If yes, how much do you tip? |

At full service restaurants, Yes. I tip and it tends to lean towards the 10% side sometimes if they go beyond their duties I tip 15%

| If it's just to pick up a sack of food and carry it out, I'll leave a couple of dollars every so often. If I go there a lot, I'll leave something extra at Christmas. |

| for take away aka carry out I usually wont tip. But I will say keep the change if the service is friendly. I have noticed more and more lately resturants that have Tip Jars at the register. Perhaps it is a hint to the people picking up the take away orders.. |

| Why would you tip for takeout (takeout to be where you walk in the food establishment and carryout - only interacting with the cashier)? I consider tips as something given in return for service. I usually tip a minimum of 15% and have gone up to 30%...depending on the service from the waiter/waitress. |

| Not normally, but I do make an exception where there is service involved, say for instance if the cashier takes my order, then makes my food (like at subway or dunkin donuts) then comes back and rings me up I will tip. |

Fast food: no.
Carry out / take out: yes, if I'm a regular. No more than 10% though. |

What about the curbside pick-up? I'm not sure who all is familiar, but they have them at Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, mostly at those chain restaurants. You pull up in the designated parking spot and they bring your food. I actually find it quite annoying because it takes longer to get the hell outta there. Here's a scenerio....
Old Way - I walk in, pay, retrieve food, I leave.
New Way - They walk out with food. I pay. Host walks back inside. Then walks back out to bring me my change. <--------this is what makes me not want to tip her. Taking me a lot longer to EAT!! |

for take away? Hell no.
In a restaurant: yes if they do it right... just seems many places don't. When i'm out with my wife though, I always tip because she makes me :( Apparently in the states the waiting staff get a really bad deal and get crap hourly rates, whereas over here in UK the waiting staff get paid quite a bit so the tips aren't as imperative... that's just me justifying being a scrooge though.

I don't either, though sometimes I should.
Tipping waitstaff in a regular restaurant is because they get low wages while the chefs make good money (or at least that's the reasoning). But in take-out and fast-food places the ones cooking are probably making the same as the counter person (minimum wage or close). They all could certainly use a little extra (as long as they do their job properly), especially considering all the attitude they get from a lot of customers.
When I was young I worked as a cook in a family restaurant with take-out window. As well as cooking for the whole place, inside and out, the cooks also manned the window.
I always resented that the waitstaff took home probably twice what I did, because I worked my butt off to get the food to them that people tipped for because it was tasty and fast, as well as serving at the window.
I only stayed there 6 weeks, a terribly lonnnggg 6 weeks, and in that time I got one tip at the take-out window... a whole 5 cents. |

I've been in the business for half my life. I tip my servers 20-25%, but tip take-out? Hell no. They get full hourly wages.
If someone did something above and beyond or took care of a hugely special request, okay. |

| In most instances, no...but there is a Sonic here that I visit regularly and I almost always tip the carhop a couple of dollars to bring our food to the car. When taking food to go from a restaurant or café, I leave a tip if there is a tip jar but otherwise, no. |

Don't your servers get full hourly wages? Here the minimum wage is $8. Your take-out person likely makes that. Depending on your restaurant, your server probably makes more than that.
For me, it depends on the service, just like inside a restaurant. McD's screws up the order 90% of the time. They don't get tipped. Subway, on the other hand, always gives me good, pleasant service. They get tipped. |

At least in California (when my mom was a waitress), restaurants could assume their servers would get 20% tips, and could pay 20% less than minimum wage. |

I was in the restaurant and service business in my HS and college years. I know how hard it is. And I also understand the importance of tiping from both sides. Trust me, if you tip people well, they will treat you nicely and do extra things for you.
That is how the bussiness works. I make it a point in tiping people well. And in most cases it pays back two fold. Restaurants, resorts, bars, etc. If you can afford to do it, do it if you want the extra care.
But I do agree, that you dont have to tip the take out people. But I do anyway for the reason metioned above. |

In Texas, nope...The Texas Minimum Wage Act requires that all employees be paid at least minimum wage, which is currently $5.85/hour (I think). Employers may count tips and the value of meals and lodging toward minimum wage. Tipped employees must be paid at least $2.13/hr. and must receive compensation with tips and wages combined of at least minimum wage. I know I was paid $2.10 an hour plus tips as a waitress almost 20 years ago...seems it hasn't changed that much. :/ |

It's supposed to be the other way around.
I wouldn't tip for takeout unless I was a regular and they consistently went above and beyond for me. |

Minimum wage for servers increased. It was $2.13 when I was a server 10 years ago. It's now $2.50 or something along those lines. I remember getting my pay checks and just laughing at my $15 check!
Going back to the original question, I usually tip for takeout. Not the usually 20% I give at the table, but at least something.
