I just wanted to release a quick note regarding DPC and the DPL... During internal discussion about DPL, a simple realization was made: We realized that we had much bigger fish to fry than simply how to run the second season of the DPL. We decided to refocus our efforts on overhauling DPChallenge. I can't say much now, but be sure that we'll make the necessary announcements when we have more information and are in a better place to release said information.

Just a side note, it shouldn't take anywhere near as long as DPCPrints2. :)

ETA: DPL is being heavily considered and will most likely be included in our overhaul.

Good to hear that the DPL hasn't fallen off the table completely. Thanks for the update Langdon!

Oh my..... an overhaul, huh?

You'll have us all chewing our nails now, waiting for the mystery changes to be revealed!

I'm little confused; I read Langdons post: Refocus on DPChallenge, not DPL...So is DPL put off for now?

I'm guessing that there are aspects of the DPL that to implement correctly would require major changes to the site in general. So while we are at it...I guess we get other stuff?

Even if DPL2 comes out months after DPCPrints2 it will still be a shorter time. Or did I miss something? Is DPCPrints2 already available? ;o)

Is it coding you need help with??
Is there anything we can help you with?

as long as there is more cowbell and an update button you can do what ever you want in the overhaul. Maybe put the update button somewhere on every page of DPC so that at any second I can see if my score has changed. :P

I just put the update button in the toolbar folder as a shortcut. Works great.

Actually, I read it as a refocus on the core elements of DPChallenge, and improving on those, with attention to DPL becoming secondary. Pure speculation without more information of course, but I think it's the right way to go.

I think this absolutely sucks big time! The code is already written for the DPL to run. What more does it take for this site to say ok lets do it. Instead we are forced to sit back and wait for a whole new set of code to be written to make changes to the site. Go ahead and make your changes, but in the mean time flip the switch and run the season two at the same time. I know we aren't forced, we can always leave the site and trust me, when the membership runs out that is probably a distinct possibility. The only and I mean only reason why I renewed my membership last time was for the DPL. If it wasn't for the teammates I had I would have left the site all together. But I stayed because I liked the camaraderie and interaction with them and it made the site more fun.

Bottom line, just run the DPL while you do whatever else it is you want to do. That or, someone please figure out a way to do it on the side. It is a shame that the site decided to take over a feature that they had no intention/capability (or whatever it was) of running or supporting.

If this is the general feeling (or if anyone disagrees), please say so. Perhaps next week's poll can seek a majority after discussion is had here. However, that said, it is my personal opinion that the DPL wasn't as beneficial to the site or the community as I had first thought it would be.

Also, I clarified the original post.

I guess a lot of people use DPL, but in my opinion DPC as a whole is far more important, and greater attention to it would benefit more people. I'm specifically thinking of the many requests for improvements to the portfolios as an example. I'd personally rather see changes and improvements there than more effort being put into DPL, which many members don't use. If enhancements and so on to site layout were being considered, or to the mechanics of the challenges and voting, those are certainly also more important in my view.

I don't agree or disagree . It is your site. Do what you want. If people leave then they leave. Leaving just over DPL not starting is ridiculous if you ask me. Most here are friendly anyway and it seems like most here are family(top me at least). Where else can you go and ask what the price of chicken in your state/country is is and get 50 replies in 1 minute.

I know if I have ANY question I can come here and get an answer within minutes.

I agree with Louis.

DPL is not universally used so universal site improvements should come first.
03/13/2008 10:02:19 PM · #16
I think maybe, everyone should just relax and wait to see what changes occur. I know most people don't deal well with change...but, we don't even know what's coming.

I agree. There would be no DPL or WPL without DPC. I joined DPC long before any league and I'm here for what DPC offered me in the beginning. The focus should be on DPC and it apparently is. I'm happy about that.

On the subject of DPL I was in the first season but I won't be in another anytime soon. So, for myself, I don't care what happens to it. Actually, on second thought, if I'm not going to join the league then it would be better not to chance the possibility of team voting or anything else negative that might crop up.

But I'd rather not be concerned with that and say that if people want a league so much then let them have it, sooner than later. If it can't be DPL for now then somebody please restart WPL in the meantime. With as much discussion as there has been since the end of season 1, it seems that there is enough interest to make it happen.

If DPC won't start DPL then why doesn't somebody so interested in a league restart WPL as a temporary measure?

I also agree. I've been waiting eagerly for the second DPL season to start but I can certainly wait some more, especially knowing that the waiting is going to result in some other, presumably awesome, changes. :-)

Another "I agree with Louis" statement.

I also have to relax and wait to see what changes are ahead. I'd hate for the changes to alter a site that I pretty much like as is!
03/13/2008 10:19:25 PM · #20
Do what you have to do Langdon we can wait. Maybe while we wait we could have a bit more of an open forum on what the problems were and how to fix them, similiar to the input thread on the rule changes.

I'm sure we members might have some good ideas but if not I still have full trust in you and the SC to get things right without our input.
03/13/2008 10:25:16 PM · #21

I also agree with all the other Louis agree'ers.
03/13/2008 10:25:46 PM · #22
I think our input is much appreciated - they are soliciting it after all. The site is run for its users, and I think they get much by way of guidance when threads like this are opened.

I (we) cannot do that without langdon's approval. Tom Foolery and I started the WPL and it worked great for 4-seasons. At the end of the third season it was found that several users had participated in friend voting to help out their team and teammates. This was not acceptable behavior and the WPL and DPChallenge took control of the situation. DPChallenge suspended the users found to be in violation for an x number of months while the WPL (me) suspended them for three seasons.

This caused concern within the community, DPChallenge, and the WPL. How to keep someone from sharing photos and voting on them based on whose they were, not the merit of the photograph. The end result was that DPChallenge would take control of the WPL and rename it the DPL. Langdon spend many months coding the site so that it would be fair for everyone and as we participated in DPL-season 1, I feel he did a good job considering it was the beta test. I'm sure he has more coding to do to make the DPL a stable venue.

I cannot speak for langdon or the SC on the progress of the DPL for season 2 but I think it would be in the best interest for the community and DPChallenge.com to wait for langdon to get the DPL fine-tuned for season 2. But if langdon has no objection with the return of the WPL, I would host it again if the community wanted me to. It would take a little while to get everything put back together but I would be willing to do it.

Scott, if you want my help with the WPL let me know. I'm sure that with our minds we can make up something pretty cool.
Only thing is we need a way to add and remove people from a SS. hahahaha

Thanks SDW for that clarification.

Those were the problems that I was talking about when I mentioned about "anything else negative that might come up". It seems that it is due to those few people that everybody is going to have to wait until all reasonable measures are put it place.

Yet another reason why I don't envy SC, but appreciate them instead.
