Ever try to do that with a 200-shot modeling session? ;)

James, either that is a tiny broom, or a giant backdrop! How long is that thing, and are you going to cut it in half/thirds?!?

I had to bump this up today.

I have 3 new muslin backdrops in the making today. 1 I am doing wine/rose color with a splash of tan. I did this one in the yard, and splashed the colors on 1 at a time, let them dry, then splashed some more.

I have 2 muslins in the wash that are soaking in a Tan color all over. I wanted a base, then I will do 1 with tan/dark brown colors, and the other one I am not sure yet.... maybe try a green on it.

I will put up pictures of them later tonight when they are done.

Its 103 here today, so I am working a few mins at a time on them outside. .phew..

I made the trip to WalMart today and got me enough muslin for 3 backdrops. Well, make that TWO backdrops - I tried my own method on the first one in an attempt to create a realistic fiery background with gasoline. I shoulda known that would only be good for one use.

Anyway, I am going to try Cindi's method this week. If it comes out messed up, I will blame Cindi. :P

I heard that!

Can't wait to see pics of the new creations!! :D

I made 2 more last week. Dog was in the way so I ACCIDENTLY dipped her tail in orange dye. Ooopsie!

I'll post pics next time I have the new ones out. One is a dark brown & I've already used it with 2 sessions... my last 2 seniors. Its terrific. The other was meant to be a mottled darrrrrrrk purple/black.... but its just purple and I'm thinking I'll re-dye it. lol

I bought a 10x18 piece of muslin over the weekend, along with 4 boxes of dye ... has anyone found a technique for making the tie-dye effect softer? sorta like this ???

Ok, I haven't actually *done* this yet....but I think if you water down the dye a little bit more you'll get more subtle colors. The other thing you might consider trying would be using a sponge to put the dye on, instead of splashing.

To me, it looks like if you had spray bottles with a more watered down version of the dye, you would probably get a nice gradient like that. But again, haven't had the chance to try it yet.

Maybe I'll go do that.....

I'd thought about possibly watering it down more than normal .... and maybe using a spray bottle with water to blend the colors more, but I hadn't thought about a sponge ... that might be a pretty good idea ... I'll post pics once I get around to dyeing the muslin ...

How about using one of the spray bottle/fertilizer type bottles that screws onto the water hose?

Put the dye into that and just spray on with the hose....you would have pretty good control that way, and can adjust from a spray, mist, or streaming.

Just an idea.

oh, I like that idea ... I'll have to get a second one so I can hook up another hose and use 2 colors ...

I have a PVC pipe background stand that I made ... not the most efficient, but it works ok at the moment ... I can see a need for an upgrade in the future!

It looks like a good technique.
I have a question though. If we are trying to isolate our subjects from the backgrouns, why do so many photographers use these bright busy backgrounds that in my opinion end up competing with the subject for attention?
Just a little question. I am still not convinced about these backgrounds.

I got pretty busy with work and life and never got around to actually using this technique ... my plan is to make them quite subtle so they don't compete with the subject ... it just got far too cold for me to do this outside so I'll either need to go buy a new garbage can or wait til spring ... I agree that a super busy background doesn't work well in all situations ... when I actually get around to making one I'll post a picture of it ...

Is there any chance that you could post a photo of how you scrunch the cloth up before dying it please

You may be lucky, but this is 7 years old !

In the original post it's pretty clear how to do it, use scrunching motions. So take up a large handful or so of cloth, wad it up and squeeze. If need be practice on a sheet of newspaper, ball it up with a squeezing/scrunching motion. Quite straightforward!

And by now there is probably a Youtube video on how to do this...try searching there too.
