Something weird is going on with my external HD. Suddenly all my RAW pictures appear corrupt. All 30,000 of them. I have MOST backed up on disk but what a PITA.

The weird thing is all my jpgs appear fine, so it may be something is messed up in my copy of Vista (I hate Vista).

Could you please look at these 2 RAW files and tell me if the appear corrupt to you?
(warning, they are raw so they are large)

Looks fine to me. I would remove the Nikon Raw Codec and re-install it if thats what you have. Maybe that'll help.

I tried the Canon one on my Mac and got the message "Could not complete your request because the TIFF file uses an unsupported compression method." But this just sounds like a PC/Mac TIFF issue, so it probably doesn't help you much. Good luck!

The weird thing is in ACDsee the RAW images look fine until it does the "High Quality Pass" then it looks corrupt.

In any case it's definitely the drive. I shot an image and copied it to my C: drive. Then I copied it to my J: drive (my external) and it instantly became corrupt. Any image that touches that drive right now instantly corrupts :(

Like I said though, I have 95% of my images backed up. I just got this fancy new camera though and had taken some snap shots of my dogs which had turned out nicer than I expected. Thos didn't get backed up :(

Oh well, I guess it could have been worse.

I wonder if in this situation if the drives had been mirrored would the file have been corrupt on both drives? The drive appears to "run" fine and SMART doesn't report any errors, it just instantly corrupts any images it touches.

I know a lot of people back up to DVD but DVDs are very cheap (and cheaply made) these days and I don't trust them all that much for long term solution.

I don't know that there is a perfect solution out there... except maybe film ;)
