helllooo
for my shoot next week, the label wants me using profoto strobes/batteries and the canon mark II
i usually use a 20d and alien bee strobes.
any suggestions? things i should look out for?

The Mark II controls are quite different from the 20D. The first time my partner handed me his ... he told me to hurry and "take the shot" and I was dumbfounded. So be sure to "spend some quality time" with the Mark II before you have to use it.

if im shooting with that camera for the first time in RAW+JPEG and dumping photos onto my computer, will I be able to access the raw files?
i had a problem w/ the 30D where I could access the JPEGS, but not the RAWS
they were visibly there, I just couldn't work with them.
Do I have to install some kind of software specific to that camera onto my laptop before uploading the photos?

| You can probably download the user manual for the mkII from canons site, id do that and a lot of reading. I think you can get profoto manuals off their site as well. |

If you have CS3 or Lightroom, you'll be able to process the raw files. If you don't have either ... you can download a 30-day trial from Adobe's website.

they have an art director and production assistant on set that want things done a specific way.
they also need larger file sizes than my scrawny 20D can push out

If its monolights you should be fine after 2 seconds. Head and pack units are sometimes less intuitive to use.
The mark3 isn't too different, button wise, from your 20D (identical to the 40D these days).
However, teh Mark2 models are COMPLETELY different and if you don't read the manual you won't even be able to change ISO or anything else that is considered pretty basic. Remember to check EVERY setting on the camera when you get it so that's it what you want and EXPECT it to be. You don't need it set in rear curtain sync or something and screw up your pics. Remember too it has 2 card slots and you can set what (RAW and JPG) gets written to what card, or the second card is just there for overflow, etc.
You can also preset groups of focus points...something you (and me) have never played with.

im planning on using 1/125 and higher for shutter speeds |

Yeah, for normal shutter speeds, second curtain sync will have no effect on your shot.
Unless your subject is moving super fast or something :-D
