When you do a critique, do you look at the comments that are already on the shot or do you try to do your critique 'straight up' from the shot itself?

The reason I asked is my last critique I finished then went back and looked at comments. My comment on the shot during challenge was quite different from my critique. With as many shots as we have to vote on lately, maybe we (I) need to take more time voting and maybe not vote on all...

This could be a good example of why voters should spend a little bit of time to really look at the picture. I'm not a cc member, but interested in asking a question. Was your critique more favorable than your original comment?

toocool,

It is easy to see from your portfolio and past entries, that you certainly have a talent for this sport. Your eye is quite good. Regarding your question of taking more time on comments or not voting, it is simply a matter of lifes elements. I have only 3 challenges entered and 5-6 voted on. My life's elements simply does not allow for the total immersion and consumation of these challenges, that I discovered all too soon occured, after entering a couple. Late nights, constant checking, it was too much of an addiction. I had to step away. My life has a sense of normalcy now. I participate on my terms. It is my membership. My photographic career. My choice. Hope you find the peace your are seeeking.

When I was doing critiques, I tried to do them before I looked at the comments. Then, I read the others. If I noticed in the comments that I had missed something obvious, I might comment on it as well. If I found that I had just summarized in one comment what 15 others had said, I tried to go back and study it and try to find something else to add. That's just me though. I don't know what others did.

Similiar to Karmat, I'd look at the photo, read the details, write my critique, and then read the comments to decide whether I need to change anything.

As Karmat, when I was still doing CC critiques, I would write my draft(and usually final) version before looking at existing comments. I'd then look through the comments for my own interest, and occasionally a comment would make me think of something else and I'd add to my draft before posting.
I figure that a critique from a CC member isn't purporting to be an "official" critique that represents the views of anyone else other or the CC as a whole, so it seems best to give my own opinions only.
Nowadays I prefer to leave comments on what I choose and when I wish, so I no longer comment from within the CC.

I guess I'm a little weird. I'd read all the comments first, and then purpously look for things that had not been mentioned in the other comments. I'd agree or disagree with existing comments, and then add to it what had not been said already.

Actually it was. My original comment may have seemed a little harsh. This is the shot I'm refering to:

This is an interesting take on things. I'm going to try this on my next few critiques! In the past I've a) read all the comments then went back and did critique or b) not read any comments before or after. I just happened to catch my comment on this one after posting because my original comment was right on top after I hit post...
