Sunday 06 January
7:00pm - 8:00pm
Channel 4
1/3
Six talented but unknown photographers take part in a digital photography competition, aiming for a final prize of a gallery exhibition and publishing deal. In this first challenge, the snappers try their hand at portrait photography, facing the daunting task of capturing each other, storm-battered beach bums, and Germaine Greer.

Might be worth watching

I am guessing my channel 4 may not be the same as yours if we are in different parts of the country/world. :)

There is only one Channel 4 ;P

UK - and it is a terrestrial channel sadly so no sky broadcast. I think i might take a look, thanks for the heads up.

ETA - at least no non-uk sky broadcast afaik.

Many thanks for this - looks really interesting and have got it in the Sky+ box. I need to check with UK Nova for legality, but it might be that it's one of those okay to cap...and if so any non-UK people might be able to get hold of it at UK Nova (signup needed).

Really? I'm showing "Deal or No Deal." I'd much rather see your channel than mine.

Definately there - unless they have Regional variations for any reason .

Okay...that's what I thought. I just wasn't sure if the name of this thread was more of a request or a title. Thanks!

What did everyone think?

I enjoyed the programme, I rather that other bald guy got voted off, I didnt like his approach at all.

I watched it, wasn't exactly impressed with the ideas or the nervousness of the photographers there. The Greer phto shoot should have been much simpler than a lot of them made it, but I think that because there was so much equipment there to play with they went a bit overboard. I was really surprised nobody just went closer and got a full face portrait with her looking at the camera with her eyes open. I think about 65% of the people on this site are better than those guys, or at least better at getting decent shots when the pressure is on.

What did annoy me was that girl (who got voted off anyways) saying the weather was too harsh, and her lens was wet, and she couldn't get the exposure right because of the weather, and if it was better then she could have played around more... no, you couldn't get the exposure because you're not good enough.

My money is on Ed to win it, he seems to have some cool ideas about things and doesn't seem fazed by the tasks they have to do.

Yeah Ed is my favourite to win, keeping things nice and simple.

What he did with the Brighton photo was so completely unathical I was amazed that he wasn't hauled over the coals for it!

And at the moment ed is robably my favourite, too.

Don't forget that if it's on television all ethics codes are ignored....drives me wild what they get away with on TV that the rest of the world/reality can't...in fact, the more unethical it is, the higher the viewing figures (see big bro for repeated examples)

Yeah - i thought that was crazy - the consent of the parents was misguided intentionally... they probably had no idea he would be holding a sign which said that... I think the cryo-greer was a pretty good shot - bit of a lot of flare around the neck but it added to the whole thing. Interesting show - will be watching next week.

The show is available to download from UK Nova: //www.uknova.com/wsgi/torrent/view/53935

It does need membership though (free) - but it can be tight, so keep retrying and you'll get one.

EDIT: Seems like membership is a PITA. Instead if you're a non-UK person (or forgot to set the sky+) and want to get hold of it, drop me a PM and I'll host it for a few days on a private FTP. This is all totally legal btw - for full info see UK Nova.

It seems one of the Judges wasn't too impressed either!
have a read in the Guardian.

Yep, I think that Martin Parr has it about right!

I've been reading around on the picture this website... all the contestants are there, some seem a bit jaded!

Personally I thought it was rather amateur. I reckon most people on DPC could do better.

Also I found it weird that the judges didnt like any use on photoshop. the one woman who used it was told that you shouldnt need any touching up.Most photos looked like snapshots IMO

But that is what pretentious "art" photography is all about no?
01/07/2008 10:33:34 AM · #23
well maybe. But one of the guys didnt even know how to expose correctly. The celebrity he was photographing had to help him. haha
01/07/2008 11:27:23 AM · #24
oh yeah i remember that... he asked the guidance woman "it's a bit fuzzy what should i do?" - if i were there i would have just slapped him and chucked him out instantly after saying "dont ask me, you are the photographer".
