I spent another afternoon trying to teach myself to light in the studio and after several hours I really started to question my vision as a photographer. I'm very comfortable with existing light and can mix in a strobe (strobist style) when necessary. I can even do ok with continuous light (fluorescent please) in the studio. But even after hours of work I could never do anything interesting with strobes in the studio. (I had no ambient light and the strobes had modeling lamps) I can play with the light that I see, but I cannot visualize and create with the light from strobes. Perhaps my creativity is limited to seeing what other might miss (exiting light) rather than creating the lighting on my own.
Anybody else struggle with this?

| I think everyone struggles with it to some degree. One thing we must understand, is that we all have various strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps shooting with studio strobes is not your strong area. However, you can still develop a certain degree of good work with practice. I look at photos experienced photographers have done and either attempt to emulate them or improve on them in some way. The more you see things from a studio strobe point of view, the more your mind with adjust to it. Don't get overly frustrated. Have fun with it. Since you are shooting digital, you can literally shoot thousands of shots while you practice. Good luck! |

I thought you were talking about flashes, not strobes.
Maybe you should go smaller with strobist. Get back to basics. Then you can get giggy-wid-di and play with strobes. |

ME!
I recently upgraded to a Canon 40D with the ST-E2 remote and two 580EX II flash. I have (2) 10 ft. light stands, (2) flash mounts, and 2 umbs. I have been reading, practicing, reading, practicing but it's a lot harder than I thought. It is something I want to learn and learn to do well so I'm going to keep on until I get it right. It may take a while though.
Any suggestions, discussions, and/or advice welcome.

Start with a single strobe... play with it and different ways to modify the light. Think about direction, intensity, softness, etc.
It's the same thing you were getting from natural light, you just have to know WHAT you want instead of discovering it.
