Had a shoot with Brittney today:

Photos on DPC

There are more but these are my favorites.

My absolute favorite is this one:

My intent with this shoot as is all my shoots is just to go out and have fun, get some good shots with different outfits and we did just that.

More photos can be found on my website. A link to her gallery:

ETA: I am supposing I fall into the semi-pro category, as this is my second job and my major source of income.

I've posted a couple of pics in my folio for my softbox. It's not a set of instructions, but it shows you how it all fits together. I'm happy to answer questions if you want to know more detail.

Posting Guidelines
1. Upload your images(s) to your dpc portfolio.
2. Update the image detail to include your goals as well as the techniques used.
3. Post a thumbnail(s) to the image her so we can have a look.
Note: If you post more than one image, the collection should make sense as a series

I own my own studio and have been doing portraits across the Midwest now for over 3 years. I try and stay out of the studio as much as possible as I think its a bit of an oxymoron to have a true portrait staged. :)

I believe the photos have all the editing and/ore technique I used so they should already be detailed for you. :)

Another one....this thread has finally motivated me to upload some pictures to my portfolio. Although, I guess I am doing it just one at a time. There have been some really great portraits on this thread so far. I have really enjoyed looking at all the great work.

I love the idea - count me in.

Here is a recent one I threw into the last challenge (and went badly). I am not happy with it as it's just too flat. I think I had the side light too far to the front and since it was a brolly, it's throwing light everywhere. I could not get the flash to fire to give some defn from behind (flee bay wireless issues) - I think I have that sorted now.

Please - any comments about how to improve would be great.

I actually prefer this one for some reason. Like I said in the comments, the OOF shift is a little off putting but I just like the eye contact and the nice contrast.

I like this one - partly because I like the out of ordinary perspective and wide angle which is just cool.

Edit: Swap images as I got the #'s backwards :-/

Thx mate... I think you might be right on the colour/white conflict. I might try re-shooting with an orange gel on the background.

Nah, no editing, just had his chin down under the collar. I didn't even notice it until you mention it but I agree it takes away from the image. I was not even a planned image... he just started reading this between shots and I thought it looked funny :)

Hey, please include me if you can.
I've been working on this for a little while & am just breaking into paid work, but I've posted nothing on dpchallenge as yet.
I'll try to fix that in the next week.

This months Rangefinder magazine came today and it features many articles on portrait photography. Very cool. There are some great artist profiles with their tips on shooting portraits. Some really nice images too.

This shot was taken about 10 minutes ago as an experiment in changing my background color without buying new backdrops (thank you SOOOOO much Gordon). Any suggestions as to where everyone gets their colored gels?

ETA - Through Strobist I found a link about a near free set of color gel swatches that seem to be perfect for speedlights. Ordered a hadful of them from B&H for basically the cost of shipping.

Hi Timfy,

If you ever see those B&H gels, you'll be lucky. From what I've heard, they are permanently backordered, and just never ship. I got a couple of sets of gels from //www.photogels.com. This guy is a strobist spinoff, selling useful sets of gels, CTO orange and blue in a couple of strengths, fluoro green, red and few blacks.

If you just want generic colours, cellophane is available from newsagents for almost nothing (or you can just keep it when you get presents wrapped in it). 2 or 3 layers of standard cellophane is great for gelling flashes, and even fluoro lamps - just don't use it on hot-lights.

Here's an SP shot taken with red cellophane on a fluoro floor lamp...
Apologies if it's too off-topic for this thread. :)

Thanks David - A part of me had a feeling it might be too good to be true. ;)

I will try the cellophane route. I am looking for good strong color and not just light balance correction options.

Hopefully these are the type of things that we can continue to discuss in this thread. Options and ideas to make our portraits better and (preferably) cheap solutions.

I hope nobody minds me joining in:

My girlfriend and her flat mates were after some photos to send to family etc for Christmas which was the perfect opportunity to practice balancing ambient and flash lighting. Unfortunately I don't have exposure details at the moment, will update them when i get home.

Yes, my thoughts too, but the one accurate colour you might want is CTO orange. Then if you are using flash against ambient tungsten lighting, you can gel your main flash and adjust the camera WB setting to tungsten. This allows you to use existing tungsten lights in the background, with the camera set to tungsten WB, and still use a flash without your subject going all blue and sickly looking.

I do have an orange cello that 3 layers is pretty close to CTO orange, and could probably be calculated back to an equivalent colour adjustment setting in your RAW converter. I never took it that far, because I got the proper gels.

When I picked up my strobist light kit it came with a gel pack that has 1/4 increment CTO gels (1/4,1/2,3/4 and full) plus 3 green Daylight to Flourescent gels, 2 blue gels, a ND gel and the red. I just need to start playign with them all.

This was actually the third time me and this model worked together. She's very short (5'2 pr 5'3") and wanted to have an update to her portfolio. She has the idea that she wants to be very sexy, but has a different idea of what sexy is (thinks big boobs are sexy). These were some of the shots were the look of her face and position of her body were more important.

It's hard to pull cute out of her too...and I think I did that in a couple of them (especially the one when she was smiling). By the way these were the ones at the beginning of the shoot. You can tell she got more comfortable with me later in the shoot and in a shoot afterwards that i'll post later.

Oh yeah...I left the copyright on these as i would for my website. Sorry.

Everyone can feel safe on commenting on these photos. Although she looks young...the model actually just turned 20. So she's old enough...lol.----that was for you Routerguy...lol.
