Anyone want to cue me in about shutter speeds and such. And I also want to learn how to take clear pictures in the dark... or with a dark background. Anything that you could help me with would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks!

You could work your way through a couple of the tutorials for starters :)

No, you're a beginner, not an amateur.

An amateur would know these simple concepts.

Just remember, you have a digital camera. Don't be afraid to work the Shutter or aparture priority modes. When those mode become more familure, you'll naturally progress to the manual mode.
