I bought a new computer with Vista pre-loaded, and now my speakers ( I have a Logitech 5.1 system, but I use it in stereo mode) won't play at their full volume. Everything is incredibly flat and even with everything at maxed out levels, it is mediocre at best.

Anyone else have this problem?

Im thinking the solution might be to go buy a new sound card instead.

vista is the work of the devil... is the way microsoft will conquer the world change to xp :)

I am actually really liking it so far, other then the stupid sound controls. Im about to just go get a new sound card that will be "independent" of the vista iron fist.

I have been using Vista since its final beta release. I have not had an audio issue, but the sound mixer function do operate differently than with XP. The volume settings are now based on a relative mode compared to the device volume. Are you getting different results from the things like IM sounds versus music? Mess around with those volume meters and you should find a solution.

if your sound card is onboard, make sure it is Vista compatible. There are computer sellers that will sell you a system with incompatible parts. Also, make sure your drivers are updated.

Been using Vista without issue since the final beta. On my laptop. On my wife/kids laptop video drivers are not supported in Vista and therefore a lot does not work properly.

Right after Adobe relieves all photographers of their hard earned cash... Isn't it time for another major upgrade :)

@ > ajdelaware, check for new drivers for your sound card... I know Realtek just updated their Vista drivers recently and most On-Board Audio chipsets are Realtek based.

I'm running 7.1 surround on one of my Vista machines and life is peachy.

Its definitely a Realtek chipset, to Ill give that a shot again when I get home. Really annoying stuff haha. I use my computer for everything - music, video, tv, etc, so not having my sound up to par is killing me. Im about to break down and just go drop $150 on a new sound card.

Realtek doesn't have Vista drivers for some chipsets. When I ran the 2000/XP driver setup I got a window saying "Sorry, only 2k/XP". After that the familiar vista window popped up asking me if the program executed correctly. I clicked "install using recommended settings" and the installation started fine. Sound A-OK.

I would be very surprised if your problem was driver related if you 're already getting sound. Open all the sound tabs, something is bound to be turned down.

I personally don't buy second hand or "unknown brand" computer parts, so even when running Windows Vista Home Premium x64, i have no driver issues. I would check to make sure there are no driver updates for your motherboard/soundboard for vista. You might want to try the speakers on some other system, like an IPod or something.

If it does the same thing with the IPOD, then you should really contact Logitech. I am also running a Logitech 5.1 Z-5500 and a Logitech 2.1 system, and it works GREAT in Vista!

I am getting tired of people dissing Vista, I remember back when XP came out... SAME THING... now those people are so attached to XP, strange? yes!

Well, my laptop mentioned above is using a video card by nVidia, a name you might recognize. :) But to date, no drivers for that model -- and the laptop is only about four years old.

What model of Nvidia card is it? My laptop has an Nvidia card, but it is only 9 months old... haha... the problem that really annoys me with laptops and their video cards, is that the manufacturer of the laptop needs to update their drivers on their web site and you can't use the drivers straight from NVidia. But, luckily some people modify the Nvidia drivers so you can install them, maybe try something from this web site: //www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista

FWIW:

I've been using Vista now back when it was RC2 and this weekend I'll be UPGRADING to Leopard (Mac OS 10.5), I'm finished with MS Borg in my personal life.

Vista is bloat ware IMHO and price they charge home users for it (in any of it's multiple guises) is robbery.

Fortunately however, in my professional life I'll still have to deal with it but that's what brings home the paycheck. ;D

And for that I say "Thank you Microsoft"!

Works fine for me.

Yup... Laptops with Intel Video Crapsets are the ones to avoid... Intel refuses to do certain drivers (910/915 worked fine (Aero/Cool stuff) on the Vista Beta), But for the RTM release of Vista they are no where to be found.

When looking at buying a laptop today watch the logo for Designed for Vista and Vista Capable... retailer will still sell you a laptop today with the Intel crapset that is only Vista Capable...meaning Vista runs but none of the cool visuals will work.

Eh, I dont mind it, and the speakers work fine. This is a new system I bought, so it came preloaded with Vista.

Not vista, but I did have a problem like this one time when I upgraded to xp. It had to do with my computer was just playing my rear sound channels on 5.1 and not the full set of front, center, back. All my speakers were just playing the one set of sounds not the full range. The problem ended up being my sound blaster sound controls were not set correctly.

Not sure if that helps any.

On my 3 year old desktop i ran vista Beta 2 and RC-1 no real problems and RC-1 added the driver for my video input card. Noticible drop in framrates on games say 10%.

Bought a laptop with vista on it, having slightly more problems mainly relating to HP wrote the nvidia driver specificly for vista/ my motherboard. I have an occasional driver crash which the system quickly rcovers from but if i say want to finish playing the game well it wont run smoothly till reboot.

I was suprised at all the complaints seeing how beta 2 and RC-1 went smoothly for me but i can see some differences in release problems. My main problem stems from HP writing a custom driver not Vista itself.

You sure ya have the speakers plugged into the correct hole on the sound card.

FWIW driver issues wouldn't cause a drop in volume/fidelity. Sounds like more of a connection problem.

Other than an initial issue with CS3 that cleared up after a re-install of Vista, I'd had no problems.

Have you tried this?

1. Go to control panel > sound > speaker > Propteries.
2. Then under enhancements.
3. Select "Disable all enchancements".

That help at all?

I figured it out!!!

There is an option that alllows you to take the 3 audio jacks on the back of your computer (line in, speakers out, mic in) and turn them into 3 separate speaker in puts (center/sub, front, rear)

So im good to go. Thanks for the advice guys.

Ah-ha... it wasn't Vista after all... just a tricky setup! :)

Well it was and it wasn't, it was actually a vista improvement on one end, and a pain in the ass on the other. I dont have surroud sound sound card in, so I would run my cords to this little box, and then it would run out of there via a single line and jsut play in stereo. So when you do that, it won't recognize it and will only play certain channels on it, but this new set up sounds great, closest to surround sound im gonna get!

Good to hear...I've been thinking about getting a nice set of speakers for my new computer. Just got a new dual core 400GB 4 gig ram setup with Vista and a nice wide screen LCD. It's nice, my old CRT was like 5 years old.
