I don't enter challenges very often because I get so frustrated...I spent a few hours yesterday trying to shoot for the pencil challenge. I thought I had a good idea but I just don't have the technical know-how to get what I wanted.

I frequently shoot for challenges but don't enter because the pictures are crap. I learned early to not just enter for the heck of it...

I don't know...sometimes I feel like the challenges are not for me. I much prefer the side challenges and shooting what I enjoy seems more important BUT the competitive side of me wants to do well in challenges.

I signed up for the mentorship (mentioned in another thread) so I hope that will help me.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I think the question you need to answer is: Why do scores matter to you?

I enter most every challenge - crap or not. I am an update button addict. Some challenges are just easier to shoot for. If you are interested I might be able to offer some suggestions on your pencil shot if you are still interested in trying to execute it. Shoot me a PM.

Duuuude! Scores matter to most people here, it's an important point of entering a challenge! lol

I've not been entering much lately. Unless I have some kind of good idea or a shoot I have scheduled somehow fits, you can count me out.
10/16/2007 02:29:34 PM · #6
What frustrates me most about the challenges is I have either taken a good photo that would fit, but it was a week too early or that good idea comes the day after the challenge closes.

I tend to cherry pick challenges at the moment. I have done a couple of side challenges and just taken photos I want to, with no thought of fitting them into a challenge.

I usually feel pretty much the same way, but I've learned so much by trying things I probably wouldn't have, had I not had the challenge to shoot for. They take me out of my comfort zone and stretch me, and even though I fail more often than I succeed, it's been more than worth the effort :D

Rehashes of old challenges (macro SIX?? come on) and some really lame (pencil) challenge (pencil) ideas do tend to turn off some people. Personally I find it really f**king frustrating to see Old Shit XIV pop up at roll-over when there are a ton of nice ideas in the challenge suggestion threads.

But anyway, if you don't want to enter you don't have to. So I don't.

edit: And while I won't pimp my own challenge idea that I am constantly mentioning, I would add that it would be nice if at least one challenge a week came from the challenge suggestions thread.

Yepp that irritates me too. But what more irritates is people going to old challenges and copy its winner and entering again. There is no creativity no original thinking, just copy.
(yes copying is good for learning, but please keep it to just that and not for challenges).

I only get fustrated when I go non-traditional with a challenge (it still fits the challege, but its not the typical shot) and it gets low scores because peoeple feel it doesnt fit the challenge. But I am learning. Now if I can only follow that discipline and not think outside the box lol :) Easier said than done ;)

who are the voters to judge you? why take their word for it? make an image because you want to, and make it how you want to, and enter it because you made it.

Amen to that. Ive seen so many repeats out there that I just skip them because there is no creativity. I dont vote them down, but I dont vote on them.

I try to enter as many as I can. That is what makes this site work for me. The challenge is coming up with an idea that's on topic, plan and execute within the time period with all the other things in life going on, and pulling off a shot that gets serious consideration. And then do it again the next week.

I've said this in threads in the past. The hard part about DPC is the challenge topic. I think some topics are odd or silly too. The Pencil challenge is a weird one, but it was fun brain storming with the family to come up with an idea.

People who enter here and say they don't care about their scores are:

1. Lying
2. Don't get the concept
or
3. Don't score well

The possible exception is 21.gif De Sousa who probably doesn't care about the score or the ribbons only becuase he's placed in the top 5 in half the challenges he's entered.

There seems to be a pall cast by some on those who do score high that they've sold out to the DPC "formula". I don't buy that for a second. Yes, some very strong images don't always win, but some very very good images do.

Trying to improve and seeing how your shot measures up to the community is also a good motivation.

I like the Free Studies too, but it is not what keeps me on DPC. Shooting for the challenge and trying to outscore the likes of 21.gif DrAchoo, 21.gif De Sousa, 17203.gif Scalvert, 21.gif Librodo, 21.gif Larus and others is my motivation. Not a bad bunch of photographers to try to keep up with.

All in good fun, of course.

21_N.gif skewsme's remark should be repeated to oneself fairly frequently. Yes, I care about my scores, but if I really cared I'd have been able to find a pencil. (Who uses 'em?)

I think if you have entered the challenge you care about the scores. and DeSousa is no exception, becuase he also put lot of efforts in composition which is due to two reasons
1. He wants to score high thus cares about scores.
2. He always wants to excel (which is very good attitude).
(I know its 2. for him but 1 also valid till some extends).

but the degree to which people care about their scores varies. when the voting is going on I do care about scores. That is update button fun, but in the long run, if I look back to my scores I do not care if my average recieved is 5 or 6. What ultimately matters is how much I learned from these challenges. I have learned a lot and this is why I wish to enter challenges.

Sorry, David, but you missed at least one major category:
4. Are more interested in seeing whether they connect with some small group than in average score

and another:
5. are looking more for comments than the average score

or another:
6. know their score may not be high, but they hope to push DPC to consider other types of images
