A lady that I know (who knows I like all things photographic) asked me to identify what the orbs of light are in these photos. There is only one cabinet in the room. Otherwise it is empty. She shot these with a P&S and the orbs only appear in this room. I told her that I thought they were a reflection from the glass that is in the cabinet. She doesn't like my explanation (not sure what she want to hear). The spots are in diffent places of the photos each time and are different sizes. Any ideas??

Was there a lot of dust in the room? They look very typical of small airborne particles close to the camera & illuminated by the direct flash.

There could have been. The thing that had me wondering was the the one in the third photo on the top left hand corner seems to follow the moulding on the door.

So can a dust particle create such a phenonomen (spelling?). How would it do this? Am I seeing a lit up dust particle?

Why do I suddenly keep thinking about roses? ;-)

That particular one IS a reflection off the door molding, which is at a different angle and reflecting flash right back where the angle is correct. The rest are dust orb reflections for sure.

Well I never........I have never seen this before. What sort of situations would this occur (dusty I know, but I have shot in a lot of different situations and have never seen this).

Could this be extraneous refractions of the flash inside the lens itself? The sort of thing that you would use a lens hood to help eliminate.

It's only a point and shoot, so no lens hood.

OK you are going to have to elaborate as I have no idea what you are talking about.

Also happens with light drizzle types of rains.

Has the friend checked the lens for dust? I know it seems odd that it's not in the same spot each time, but that may be because different dust spots are being lit each time. Just a thought.

I will prbably check it for her.

It can't be dust on the lens. Dust on the lens can't reflect light at the sensor, so it doesn't show up like this. It's dust in front of the camera, or water droplets, or whatever, but this looks like dust, reflecting the on-camera flash. It's very common. It's not a mystery at all.

Yep that makes sense to me.

Created the same way as the blob in this crop, except with dust instead of a snowflake :)

A curious discussion about the dust and reflections from moldings. I am interested to see what shows up in the days to come in the explanations from different members. Maybe there are examples from other people as well. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

well I'm no expert but the room looks freshly painted and the White Gloss enamel used on the doors and windows are probably very reflective along with the glass panels would bounce the flash about the room.

Or Ghosts ;P

I dont know if it was freshly painted but I did ask and the walls were painted in gloss. A couple of the other pictures that had these marks also had reflections from the tongue and groove walls on the ceilings. The flash on the grooves reflected onto the ceiling.
